31/8/87 Desert Songster

40122 Preston - Kensington O/Waterloo - Exeter - Reading - Banbury - Preston. Only 769 miles (Oh, and a pair of 73s Kensington - Waterloo)

Overtook the Waterloo - Exeter Hoover at Woking and pinched its path.

Just over the ton up the Berks & Hants on the return.

Personally I had 40 + 24/25/26/37/45/47/50/76/Ethel and several steam combinations on BR era railtours & am sure there would have been other variants.

In the preserved era 40145 has worked railtours combined with class 31/42/steam (top n'tail on the ELR), class 33/37/47/52/55, class 50/67 (top n'tail) and class 57 (for heat) all on the mainline.

The Devonian (Preston to Paignton ) May 1984

40135 & 40057, 40057 failed on the way back & they were both removed at BTM for 47199 to Crewe, where 40177 took the train back to Preston

(I was 13 at the time, my first railtour)

In BR days, did 40135+40145 ever work any Charter trains as a pair?

Not that I am aware of. 40135 did work at least two tours including "The Devonian" (with 40057 as mentioned earlier in this thread) and on 2/9/84 an Aberconwy Labour Party charter from Holyhead to Carlisle & rtn as far as Llandudno Jcn.

The pair have of course been used together on the ELR portion of 145 mainline tours.

40042 Rochdale to York via Woodhead Tunnel & Tinsley.

I suspect fumes would have been lingering about the portals for days afterwards...

Two favourites:

Merrymaker - Rotherham to Brodick Pier (for Isle of Arran) sometime in 1979

South Wales Whistler - to Carmarthen in April 1984.

We may have had a 40 to Edinburgh on a Merymaker once.....

Just to rub salt in the wound (for anyone on "The Hampshire Hotchpotch"): 40 195 from Nottingham to Eastleigh Works Open Day on "The Solent Explorer" (29th May 1983), when the train was routed into the servicing platforms on the depot loop. On the outward journey the 40 didn't come on until BNS, 45 102 working from Nottingham (via Leicester). Return was via the Cotswold line and a photo stop at Moreton-in-Marsh.

My list of class 40 powered excursions and railtours that have stuck in the memory as most enjoyable for destination, routing or the deteriorating weather (BLS Palatine) includes

29 April 1978 - D.A.A./D.E.G. - The North West Rambler
40170 and 40185
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/70s/780429da.html

12th May 1979 - S.R.P.S. Railtours - The Buchan Line
40061
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/70s/790512sr.htm

26th May 1980 - B.R. (Day Excursion) to Balloch Pier
40065
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/800526br.htm

25th ( - 26th) April 1981 Branch Line Society The Palatine

40025
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/810405bl.htm

1st May 1982 Northern Railfans / R.E.S.L. The Anglian Whistler
40081 + 40012
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/820501cf.htm

6th - 8th May 1983 F + W Railtours The Skirl o'the Pipes II
40068 + 40084
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/830506fw.htm

7th - 8th April 1984 Hertfordshire Railtours Leuchars Aide
40009 + 40033
http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/80s/840407hr.htm

I could go on listing 40 hauled outings such as the 40 over Woodhead on the LCGB (NW) Class 44 Farewell, the Westward Whistler (already mentioned by others) and the more recent SRPS McBuffer Puffer which was memorable for what 40s did best - make lots of noise. 40145 storming out of Glasgow Queen Street on the SRPS tour was undoubtably DEE RED FULL! I hope some time in the near future it will happen again.

Ah, yes. I was on "The Leuchars Aide" - and also "The Border City" the month before, with 40 028 & 40 086.
