It's a much deeper bass like rumbling - maybe the Valentas sound like that as well, but (to me at least) any other sound is drowned out by the screaming Napier turbo.

But I agree - it will be a sad day when the scream has gone for good...

Possibly only a couple of years away now that GNER has also signed up for muted HST's. Enjoy 'em while you still can :grin:

I do, whenever I'm down at Stevenage station. My work also overlooks the ECML, and the scream permeates the building quite easily - I love it, but I don't think my colleagues do :)

I'm a bit of a noobie - is the MTU a 16 cylinder engine? What is its power and displacement?

2720kw = ~3650hp

Surely they can't be making that much power in the HST application?

I assume that even though it has 16 cylinders and multiple turbochargers, the physical size of the MTU must be similar to that of the Valenta?

3560hp? Nope

They down-rated it to the same as a Valenta, 2250hp.
As an aside, the Paxman 12VP185 has 2700hp.
