Day 1, chasing 68s.

Started bright and early from Birmingham Snow Hill doing the 0609 Kidderminster-Marylebone on 68011 through to London.

The late arrival ment a quick dash for 0845 Marylebone-Moor St as it was my 1st winner of the day, with 68014 at the business end. Did it throughout and back to Leamington on the 1055.

There I let the 1015 go as it was 68012 and I needed 68013 which was on the 1045 behind. Took 013 to Moor St, for 012 back to London.

With time to kill, went across town to Victoria for a round trip to Gatwick on the 442s. Set out was dud, but noticed service behind was a pair of winners. Had some time Gatwick so went for lunch, coming back through the barrier the lady claimed my rover wasnt valid there!!.

Anyway, back to Marylebone for the 1750 Banbury, which was 68015 and my last winner for the day and took it to Bicester. Now on 168217 back to London.

On the Edinburgh sleeper tonight.

So why did they refuse you at Gatwick, apart from being poorly trained Muppets that is?

That very reason. She was a Southern employee and she said she didn't think it was valid there. I said it was valid all over the country, but got no, no go see that man who was more than happy.

Crikey that was an intense day of bashing there! Enjoy the 92 on the Down Lowland, booked 67 from Carstairs.

Thanks.

It was 90045 Euston-Carstairs, 47815 Carstairs-Edinburgh.

Hellfire! An FL 90 (unfortunately not 87002 or 86101) to Carstairs for a brush forward to Waverley!

Better than an EWS one! Sure a 92 would have been 100 times better but still. And 68s don't work the sleeper from Carstairs anyway. Having a 47 on it would be brilliant!

At least it looks like the woman on the Gatex gate spoke to you.
The last time I was there, the lady used a series of sneers and finger points to communicate my obvious failings.

I didn't realise 47s were in use on the sleepers now, the Edinburgh portion appeared to be a 67 on my visit up that way recently. Passed it in the dark so couldn't be certain of course.

I'd be more than happy with a Freightliner 90, especially as that was is required here! Can't recall if the 47 is also required but wouldn't surprise me if it is.

Fair to say a 47 would be more entertaining than a 67 or 90 on the portion!

Disappointing to hear of more poor training of barrier staff, you'd be surprised how many places have never heard of or seen an ALR. Shoeburyness is just one I can remember.

Day 2, ECML.

After doing the sleeper which was 90045 to Carstairs for 47815 to Edinburgh, did 158717 to Inverkeithing for the Fifes. Did 68007 on the half circle to South Gyle, then 68006 on the full Circle into Edinburgh.

Then went for a Subway Breakfast baguett and coffee £3 deal, then went for the 0930 to Kings Cross as far as Newcastle with 43307/313. There I took 91122 forward to York on the 1000 behind. At York I met up with a friend who has bashed HSTs since they were built. Joined him for a York-Kings Cross round trip, doing the 0755 INV-LKX with 43318/277 down for the 1600 LKX-ABN with 43251/310 back up.

He then waited for the XC HST back to Durham, and I had the boring combination of 185101 & 333002 back to Steeton and Silsden.

A nice bit of mileage accummulation on HSTs there, and even better it was a social occasion.

Your mate must have got many hundreds of thousands of miles off HSTs in almost 40 years!

Day 3. Cumbria Coast.

So Wednesday was a start and finish at home day.

Drove to Carnforth for the 1004 Preston-Barrow. Arrived on time with 37423 on the DBSO set. A good run and we arrived afew minutes early.

The set with 401+402 on arrived soon after for the 1138 to Carlisle. A departed almost right time with 402 leading.

At Carlisle there was time for afew photos and a quick visit to the station buffet, then back on board for the departure of the 1437, this time with 401 leading. Did that to Corkickle, for 423 back to Carlisle.

Watched it depart on its return to Barrow, then went to the chippy.

390136 to Lancaster. Watched and photted 86632+627 cruise through on a southbound liner then 185125 back to Carnforth, where I arrived back to find a live band playing!.

Thursday its back south and east anglia for some 90's and hopefully more 37's.

Hellfire?!?!??! A skoda for a twank? I couldn't think of much worse...! An absolute comedown from 68s.

I beg your pardon!!!!!!!!!!!! twank:o:roll:, wash your mouth out lad;):lol:, I'll not have any blasphemy about 47's thank you:oops::oops::lol:. However I am a big fan of 68's but hey I get all tingley about 47's.

There someone speaks my language!!!!!!

Your certainly getting a fair old mileage there, as tech, has already said and a wide variety too. 37's, 47's and 90's HST's, it's like the early 90's again, albeit the brand new but equally awesome cats bring you back to modern times, however I'm jealous as sin with the 47 for haulage, it's a super mega dud but by god I'd love to hear the sweet music from the front window again. Cracking read, looking forward to the next installment,

Day 4. Anglia.

So I set off for my 2nd stint away from home.

Early start again and took the 1st train of the day to Shipley from Steeton on 333002.
After going to McDonalds for breakfast, picked up the Bradford-Kings Cross into Leeds with 91119, then over the bridge and onto the 0710 Leeds-Aberdeen with 43319/257 to York.

At York it was time to head south onboard the 0600 Berwick-Kings Cross with 91105, which on calls at Retford and from there had a good run for a slightly early arrival.

Then over to Liverpool Street and caught the 1030 to Norwich on 90004. Was going to do it through to for the 37s, but by Ipswich it was 20L, so bailed of for abit of photting. However GEML was on near collapse as the 1100 Liv St-Norwich had burst at Whitham. But things were still able to move around it, and the 1130 arrived with 90007 so took that through to Norwich.

At Norwich had abit of a wait before doing the 1455 to Lowestoft, and in that time was the 1100 arrived with 90014 on top of the DVT and 90002 with its pan down at the rear.

Then it was time for the Lowestoft. 37425 at the front, 419 at the back and finally I managed a round trip on the Anglia short set, have been twice thwarted when it was 47s with failures.

At Norwich head back towards London, doing 90011 to Colchester, for 90012 forward.

Had a 1st trip on a Boris Bus, then headed to Paddington for the Down Rivera. Was there in plenty time to claim one of the un-reserved seats. On time departure with 57604 on the front, went via Parkway, and took it all the way.

Day 5 & 6. Into the southwest.

So arrived in Penzance off the down and a brief look at the harbour ( which had been hauled by 57604), then went for breakfast.

After that went for the 0844 to Pad with 43188/022 and took them to Exeter St Davids. Then decided to go down Dawlish for abit, taking 143617/153382. Then on arriving realised that the path along the sea wall was been reopened, so went for a walk to Red Rock and back, having one of the ice creams that Network Rail paid for.

From Dawlish, resumed my bash and caught the 1413 Paignton-Pad to Taunton with 43186/144. Had planned to only go to Tiverton on it, but the XC Hst on 0632 Dundee-Plymouth I was waiting for was so late I could make it at Taunton.

Eventually it came, running an hour late with powercars 321/357. However on departing came the message that the line was shut at Dawlish!! (Couldnt make it up), due to a suspect landslip. So my train arrived at Exeter, and was eventually terminated.

I then kept close to a delayed Pad-Pnz as that would the 1st train south. After a while a Paignton stopper was sent on its way, then after about another 20 or minutes, the pad-pnz departed and was now calling Plymouth & Penzance only. Power cars were 43129/164 and we arrived 110L.

Day 6 Saturday. Day in Cornwall.
Started from Plymouth catching the 0644 Bristol-Penzance which 43177/175 took that to St Austell. There I waited for 43042/027 back to Par on 0954 Pnz-Pad, then did 57602 on 1125 to Plymouth throughout.

That was the morning on Fgw, the afternoon was on XC.

At Plymouth waited for 0640 York-Pnz with 43384/378. Did them to the end of the line and back to Par on the 1625 to Leeds. Then went up to Newquay on 0632 from Dundee with 43366/303. Went for fish and chips (£7 !!!!) and then visited the arcade. Then did the HST back to Plymouth.

Day 7. Sunday. The journey home.

So my trip is into its final leg.

Left Plymouth this morning on 0840 to Paddington with 43004/097 and went all the way. Then a combination of 73, 92 & 72 stock to St Pancras.

And back to Leeds on EMTs 1440 with 43043/064.

Now on 333008 to finish at Steeton & Silsden.

Well, that was a very good read.
It's interesting to see what people do on all-liners these days, really makes me nostalgic.
Thanks.

Sounds an enjoyable week, not sure if I could do 7 days in a row myself, need the exercise!

I wonder if it's really worth going to Devon and Cornwall (apart from sleepers) on an ALR when day rangers there are only £10 a day?

Sounds a good week.

I think I'd have to build 'exploring time' in certain places to break it up, certainly to avoid the numb bottom syndrome if nothing else!!

Some decent machinery had, won't comment on Lord Spoon Goon's choice ;)

Quite the mileage had too, not bad considering it wasn't exactly a mileage-based trip!
