I was travelling through Basingstoke last month and saw a 444 coupled to a 450. The 450 had a broken window, so I assumed it was just some sort of rescue operation. But on Saturday at Waterloo I again saw a 450 coupled to a 444. Is this usual? I'd never seen it until Basingstoke.

Not diagrammed very often in normal circumstances but it isn't at all rare. Probably happens a couple of times most weeks...

Happened regularly a few months ago on services which were usually 444+444.

Are SWT's down on their 444s with any OOU for non routine maintenance? Have any 444s gone away to wherever for a complete external repaint over the last week or so?

444002 was out of service for a while, but it's now back in service. Not sure whether any others are out, apart for routine maintainence

There are actually some diagrammed now. The 0820 Weymouth-Waterloo from Southampton Central onwards on Weekdays, and several of the afternoon Poole-Waterloo Semi Fast trains on Sundays.

There is still a shortage of 444s, but not as bad as when 4002 was on long-term sick, when either 1G55 or 1G57 would regularly be formed of 9/444+450.
