ABOUT 80 passengers had to be evacuated from a train after it caught fire at Hooton railway station.

Two engines from Ellesmere Port, and one each from Chester and Bromborough, raced out to the blaze at 9.18am today (Tuesday, April 24).

Nobody was injured as a result of the fire, which started due to a mechanical fault.

Hooton station had to be closed until 11.30am and crews remained at the scene until 1.50pm in order to cool down the motor section of the six-carriage train before handing it over to Merseyrail for repair work.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Hooton railway station is fully open and trains operating normally.
