Good ol' IKB

well, my prediction is:

First 60 to be condemmed:

[My prediction is based on the following]

- Severe power unit damage - written off

- Damage to bodyside that will need cutting and replacing - weakening overall body structure

- EWS are culling the 60 fleet anyway :x

The odds dont look good

R.I.P. IKB

it put a leg out of bed and blew a hole in it's side.

Apparently it's been used as spares or something, but it doesn't look like it's making a comeback and it's nameplates have been removed.

Don't see how putting a leg out of bed could damage the crank casing :? The piston is connected to the crank, but I'm sure that the force of it coming out of the engine block would be enough to seperate the two. Unless debri from the incident ripped chunks out of the casing etc. etc.

Actually, thinking about it, the piston could snap the crank when it flew out... and it's a hell of a job to replace a crank, new engine would be far easier.

Thats because it DIDNT throw a piston.

The crankcase went bang, probably due to oil and fuel dilution ...but there are 'weak points' in the case itself so in theory that is the first place that goes thus avoiding major engine damage

.......that said if it was that that just gone i think it would be back in traffic by now......

Its has been rumored that EWS were considering re-engining the 60's with another power unit......perhaps instead of condemnation and stripping, it might be the first contender for this project :?: :!:

Ok, ok then....... ;)

.......lets just not re-engine the 60s, leave IKB and the other stored members rottong at Toton (or wherever else they may be) and wait till the rest of the class sucomes to a simillar fate or EWS gives up on them completly - ala 58s/56s............... :!:

........yes, thats a wonderfull idea..we couldnt re-engine or re-number them....gosh, thatd be a crime

Re-engining 60s wouldn't be a bad idea as such IMO. But if you replace the engine, you'd have to replace other bits too? Like in a PC, if you replace the mainboard, you've usually got to replace the CPU, RAM, graphics card...

Why is it that the 60s aren't having such a good life out of them like the 37s? It's a pity that most aren't 15 years old IIRC, but the 40-year-old 37s are now going bust. 25 years difference!

The 60s are a far less technically successful class. They've had technical problems since they came out of the works, and the Mirlees engine really doesn't do it for them.
