As I said elsewhere:

WOOOOOOOOO---HOOOOOOOOO!!! Rateable Traction on daytime runs on the WCML! Me thinks a potential overnighter at Rugby, finished with a hellfire bash down to Euston in a MK3 and a trip made home....MK3s on daytime runs in 2006, man I never thought I'd say that about the WCML this year when thinking about 2006 way back when in 2005!

BRING IT ON!

I think its just possible for me to be the 6:20 if Im on the first southbound service from Coventry 8-) Although its stupidly early, so early in fact it gets to Euston before the sleeper. Most likely I will do the evening return working sometime

Bring it on!

Just hope it stays reliable and they don't sub a pendo in when they are available as feared...

If anyone is able to find any cheapy fares on the evening trip, could they post the dates here as i haven't had any joy finding any, trains seem completley exempt from apex's!

Its fairly cheap if youve got a YP. £22.30 return from Coventry

What happens if a Pendolino is not available and the (87 that had worked from Rugby) has to cover the Pendolino's Diagram and can't make it for the 16:52 to Birmingham New Street, would another 87 hauled set would had to be used for the 16:52?

Well there must be some spare Pendolinos, it's easier to have a 87 doing the smallest diagram than no safe (driver knowledge) spare units.

The only other services which realistically it can be kicked out on is the 0810 Euston-Brum/1000 Brum-Euston. This is the next part of the normal R20 diagram, and were often worked by the standby set with a skoda last year. Crew diagramming prevents almost any other use.

In the new timetable leaflets the services are marked as "NP", non-plastic, excellent! "R" for real train could also have been used!

Mr.313, the 1900 Brum-Euston does stop at Watford, i will probably be bailing off there a few times

I haven't found any cheap tickets for that train whatsoever. Dead annoying, although I might do the one off Rugby one day after an overnight, combo SDS/SDRing the trip. I'll see what I can do, I ain't letting locos on the WCML in 2006 escape! I can't believe it's been over a year since my last 87 haulage, which was 87002 Euston - MKC. Doing a 390 back was less than fun...

It certainly looks like there are no apex fares whatsoever on these services, Bransons PR machine rolls into town!
Options are doing Rug/Cov-Brum CDR in the evening, basically going to Euston is chingy! A Nuneaton saver however is (afaik) the best bet, being valid via Brum, and cheaper than Brum/Cov-Euston, but thats still £20+ with Y-P, and without a railcard your not valid on G21 anyway!
I'd be glad to hear of any other reasonable options...

Also, i overheard some people at the Servern Valley last weekend saying Rugby overnights are a no-go as you are kicked off around midnight, so I'd double check with someone who knows Rugby.

Oh right, cheers for that boss. That puts an end to that idea then, although if the 87 is at the back, it's not really worth it anyway!

I'm continuing with my plan to include it in a round robin-style trip, currently this means I have quite a bit of reliance on connections at B'ham being made, and more so the last leg of the journey running on time!

My proposed plan:

Hereford to Newport (ATF bog unit)
Newport to Paddington (FGW HST)
Travel around London on a mini number crunching spree, then work over to Euston.
Euston to Birmingham New Street (VWC 87-hauled set)
Birmingham New Street to Hereford (CT's 1859 IIRC to Hereford, due into Hereford in time for the 2107 home)

Even now I see a potential problem. From memory, there may be a need to change onto the FGW HST at Worcester or Great Malvern. What's the problem? This service runs late most of the time, so the potential to miss my bus at Hereford is quite likely...Still, the new CT TT 4 might reveal an end to that worry.

Oh, I can't wait to do this once the World Cup is over. Shame the timings don't work out for a return trip without an overnight stay, but I'm sure I'll work something out.

Well I am looking to taking photos of the 87 at Harrow on Monday (No Exams!) and I will certainly ride on them to Rugby and Birmingham New Street (if there is a good offer by yorkie ;))
