Something that I've always wondered...

You're making your way down the train, checking tickets or serving refreshments. You see a passenger with RailUK Forums open on their laptop or mobile devices- what do you think?

Are you wary of making any faux-pax (More than usual) in case it ends up on here? Or do you think "this person's an ally, if there's any aggro, at least I'll have a witness"? Or anything in between?

Discuss...

With the greatest of respect not many on train staff will know (or care) that such a website even exists

Never seen it being viewed by anyone other than myself, to be honest. I reckon the user base, whilst impressive compared to some other forums, is pretty small in terms of the proportion of passengers using it.

I know some of my colleagues are members, but it's never really come up in conversation with them either! Strange, really, given we tend to end up discussing anything and everything railway-related in the messrooms and elsewhere.

If I did see someone using it, I'd probably try to sneakily see their username before deciding whether to engage in conversation ;)

True enough, but as I've asked the question on this website, it's safe to assume that any rail staff who respond will be aware of its existence! ;)

I have never seen it. I only know personally two or three other staff from my TOC that are members, they do not post very frequently (one does not post at all).

One is a driver, one a Customer Host, one Revenue. No other Guard.

I sometimes think the members of the forum overestimate it's profile...

At the same time though why are people waiting for the on train staff to slip up, just so they can post straight away, so they get the attention and sympathy they crave?!

Have they literally got nothing better to do, they are so consumed by the fact to report what has gone on?!

If it was me, I'd be sucking up them, being dead friendly and polite, because knowing some of the clowns on here, they'd report you for so much looking the wrong way at someone!

I know from seeing them that a few of my staff use this forum but if I saw it on a train Id never speak about it as that way lies danger. Hence why I keep anonymous in most aspects.

No on e needs to know

Would any on board staff be able to nessescary tell the difference between. Railforums and any other v bulletin forum just by a quick inadvandertant glance, you could start talking to them about it and they are actually posting on "men who like to dress as babies" forums

When I was on the last ever Northern service (under the old franchise) the guard identified the site by name, said he was a member and knew that at least one of us was making the effort to come and see the franchise out.

Knew several members by name including Artic troll

I'd continue my job as usual. If I change my behaviour it means:

• that I've got something to blame on myself

• that I do things wrong the rest of the time

Towards the end of my time on the railway I was a regular viewer of this site but didn't register until quite recently, so impressed was I by the welcome given on here to railway staff! And quite frankly when carrying out on-train duties I was far too busy to have time to attempt any snooping of what passengers might be looking at on their mobile devices. Ticket commission didn't earn itself!

What about RTT has any on-train staff member seen that open on a customers laptop or mobile device?

This seems such a strange & random question. I can't believe they would notice & if they did even give it a second thought. What's the difference between that & a punter reading railway porn? Most are only concerned with what rubbish some numpty is going to broadcast onto Twitter.

Plenty of staff must have seen me with RTT open, I typically have it sitting there in front of me on my tablet (wifi trains) or phone (non-wifi trains) for the whole trip (and no, I don't actually *look* at it constantly, I mostly look out the window, but I like to have it available instantly if I require it). Also I do like to assist other nearby passengers if possible with the RTT info when there are no staff handy (makes me feel useful!).

It was simply an open question, I know that there are members of this forum that work for Northern and TPE, the two TOCs I use the most. I'll confess to being slightly guarded when using the forum on the train because of NOT wanting an unexpected conversation which I wasn't prepared for (I suffer from anxiety and am on the autistic spectrum) however unlikely that may be, but I did wonder how it was on "the other side of the fence". Those posters who suggest I should get a life are probably right! ;)
