Anyone know how far in advance the advance fares are released and what day of the week?

It can vary- I think it's supposed to be a minimum of 12 weeks. NXEC offer email alerts- dunno if they work just for their services, or for all tickets available through their site.

Booking horizons change on Fridays each week, usually extending the existing horizon by one week. They are different for each TOC.
Tickets become available on Fridays during the day. Sometimes even on Thursday afternoons.
Watch that journeys involving connections won't be available until every TOC in the journey is within the booking horizons.
This is my experience based on using NXEC and connections and MML and connections.

Virgin have only JUST released their tickets for May 1st-4th due to them clarifying some engineering works which were still not confirmed
