Advice on good quality camera

Just wondering if anyone could advise me on a high quality camera, what takes very high quality pictures with a decent zoom and long and short shutter?

I've got a Panasonic Lumix FX-45. I got it cheap but I believe the correct price is about £400. It's far too complicated for me but the deal was so good I was loathe to turn it down.

I usually just take photos with my iPhone 4S, does the job well enough, but if you're looking for proper camera, you're looking between £200 and £500

I have to agree a SLR is the Best option..

The trouble with DSLRs at that price range is you are going to be pretty restricted on zoom length.
