Yesterday it was alarming levels of depression, now it's a 20 year high for alcohol deaths (in 2020):

Alcohol killed more people in 2020 in England and Wales than in any of the previous 20 years, official data shows.

There were 7,423 deaths from alcohol misuse last year - a rise of 20% from 2019, the Office for National Statistics says.

Deaths increased from March 2020 onwards when the UK's coronavirus epidemic forced the first national lockdown.

Most deaths were related to long-term drinking problems and dependency.

The ONS defines alcohol deaths as those directly caused by misuse of alcohol.

Last year, around 80% of those deaths were from alcoholic liver disease, 10% from mental and behavioural disorders due to alcohol use and 6% from accidental poisoning by exposure to alcohol.

In England, men living in the most deprived areas were four times more likely to die from alcohol than men living in the wealthiest areas.

The alcohol death rate for men in 2020 was twice the rate for women - and this is no different from previous years.

In the last few months of 2020, when alcohol deaths were highest, death rates were 17.8 per 100,000 for men and 9.7 per 100,000 for women.

There is clearly collateral damage from restrictions and ignored ailments, but policy making is doing a good job of ignoring them.

You know the anti alcohol lobby will now be pressing for more taxes and laws against alcohol then (which will just end up hurting responsibile drinkers more than those they want to target).

And there's a massive overlap between the characters in the anti alcohol lobby and those who most voiciferously support COVID restrictions / COVID zero.

So most of those quoted in the article had already been heavily drinking pre-COVID. Wonder how the stats will be next year when 2020/2021 are factored in more widely?

I read something about this recently. A doctor in Newcastle was interviewed by one of the tabloids in March (I think it was the Guardian) and he said the UK is sitting on a medical catastrophe which is likely to put the NHS under massive pressure in the years to come. He stated since Covid19 swept into the country, people's alcohol consumption has accelerated as most people are stuck at home all day every. More and more of the population are suffering depression and isolation because of the lockdown(s) which leads to increased drinking.
