Round and round the roundabout.
Friday 2nd November 2018
Time marches on so quickly, doesn't it? Already it's November, and 2018 is on the verge of drawing to a close. With winter comes the dark nights, cold winds and, eventually, the December timetable change. With said alterations looming, I knew that time was running out for me to find the last remaining member of the class 314s which, much like Mr.13 and his very similar 315s, not too long ago I felt slipping through my fingers.
I had some business to take care of in the morning, so it wasn't until nearly midday that I made my way to Waverley station to find not very much moving. A signal failure at Haymarket meant that most trains heading towards Newbridge Jn area were cancelled. I was just heading to buy a ticket when I hear an announcement for the 11:30 Queen Street departing from platform 10. It was already knocking on 11:33 so I hurriedly make my way over to
365521 all by itself, expecting to find it rammed full but actually it was quite the opposite. I was the only one in the carriage until Croy! A storming run it was too, such a great noise these things make.
Anyway, Queen Street was reached eventually and I pop into the ticket office to buy my Roundabout. I had considered buying the Daytripper ticket but all my intentions today could be got within the smaller area of said Roundabout. Central station was reached in no time, and my first port of call was a coffee! Very much needed so it was. I see a Gourock service formed of a 314 departing soon, and I elect to take it on two grounds; it'll take me past Shields Depot, and it was a slow service so I can knock off a couple of shacks on the way. So
314211 was boarded, and I pay particular attention to where I'm sitting in order to get a good view. I see the prize sitting on one of the depot roads, so I know that it is still indeed available. Excellent, I've got a few hours to go until the working that I think it'll appear on so I set about the secondary task of today, and alight at
Hillington East.
From here, I have a plus 6 onto a service back to Glasgow, or I can walk up to Hillington West station, which is visible along the tracks. I opt to take the walk since it's not really all that far, I can do it in a little over 15 minutes, but my big coat + hoodie + shirt + coffee meant I was a tad on the warm side by the time I got through the industrial estate to
Hillington West, where I have a short wait for
380016 to take me to the other shack on this stretch,
Cardonald. Since I was in a walking sort of mood today, I ponder heading over to Mosspark for all of about ten seconds until I sit down, and take the 30 minute fester on the chin. During said fester, I formulate some sort of a plan for the rest of the afternoon, look up some connections, watch a plethora of desiros pass, and still have 15 minutes to wait. Cardonald isn't a place I shall be visiting again any time soon!

Eventually,
380015 arrives to take me back to Glasgow Central.
One short interlude later, I board
156433 working the 14:57 Barrhead service, as I decide to go after those shacks. 433 also happened to be a winner, as was the other unit on the Barrhead shuttles today, so that swayed my decision a bit. I take this one almost all the way to the end of the service to
Nitshill. Quite possibly one of the roughest places I've ever been to! The walk back to
Priesthill and Darnley was quoted as 19 minutes, and the timetable allowed 18 minutes to do this. Fear not, as I managed it in 10 with a steady pace. 156433's return was even delayed a little to make the connection even more comfortable.
Kennishead is reached momentarily, before
156437 shows its face, and I climb aboard quite a busy service up to
Barrhead. I find it's better to do these shacks this way as it's a cross-island interchange onto an ex-Kilmarnock service back to Glasgow (once an hour, as the other half hourly ex-Kilarmock doesn't call at Barrhead) and it's dud
156512 that is working this one.

I'm back in Glasgow just after 4 o'clock, and my stomach is howling now, so I grab some scran before heading downstairs to see what's going on as there's still an hour or so until the moment of truth. I don't have to wait too long before a winner appears, and it's
318262+320312 that I take out to Hyndland. Unfortunately I can't hang around too long, and
320308 is taken almost immediately back to Glasgow Central.
I nip to the lavatory before checking the progress of the empty stock working for the Neilston express, and it's arrived already into platform 10. It's two red 314s in the platform ahead of a 318. I don't pay any attention to it, with my eyes firmly set on the front train. Will it produce? Won't it? The rear portion is identified as a dud, and I walk up to see what's on the front when...

...the class clearance cannon sounds for the first time for me! All I need to do now is wait for the right time, and I can put a big red line through the sixteenth member of the class. Bang on time
314207+314202 leave amidst fireworks and cheerleaders, first stop Muirend, although I take it out to Patterton as it has the best connection for something back to Glasgow.
Surprisingly enough it was
380008 that took me there. There wasn't anything particularly interesting floating around, and I didn't particularly want to take the Shotts stopper back to Edinburgh, so the walk to Queen Street was made where I see that the 18:30 is a pair of duds sighted earlier in the day. I opt to hang back for the 18:45 which throws out a similarly dud pair of Networkers. With three of the Scottish ones still to find, I'm not too impressed that it's
365509+365537 that are carrying me to the Capital this evening. We pick up a few minutes delay as an ill passenger is removed at Falkirk High (passed out drunk) which puts my first choice method of getting home in the bin, so it's over to the 19:55 Tweedbank with
158789+158705 doing the honours.
Nothing more to say, other than what a stroke of luck it was that it came back when it did, for as long as it has. I suspect that December will indeed spell the end for it though, with the E&G due to go fully 385 operated.
