Although not suitable for the OP due to length of journey, could you travel GA from London Liverpool Street to Norwich, then EMR from Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street?

Not without buying two tickets. Indeed, the earliest point at which you can pick up the EMR service with a London to Liverpool ticket is Warrington Central.

Would

St Pancras-Nottingham-Liverpool by EMR be a valid route?

There was once a St Pancras-Liverpool Central service, wasn’t there?

Edit: sorry- just realised that the thread was over a month old. Still curious, mind…

No. That is not a permitted route for a ticket from London to Liverpool. As I noted, the first place the EMR service can be picked up is Warrington Central.

Intriguing though is that you can get an itinerary for Mill Hill Broadway to Liverpool via St Pancras and Nottingham on a booking engine.

What is wrong with getting on it at Peterborough? I have also found some itineraries doubling back via St Pancras

Which map combination allows travel via Peterborough?

London to Liverpool has the following routes (with broad summary shown)

BV+GC (High Wycombe and Birmingham)
CH+BJ+GC (High Wycombe and Chester)
CH+EJ (WCML and Chester)
CH+RJ+RG (Reading, West Midlands and Chester)
EV (WCML plus loops and Runcorn)
ME+EB (WCML and Shrewsbury)
ME+GC (High Wycombe and Shrewsbury)
ME+RB+RG (Reading, Birmingham and Shrewsbury)
NO+NC+EJ (WCML, Crewe and Warrington)
NR+NC+EJ (WCML, Crewe and Warrington)
RV+RG (Reading, Birmingham and Runcorn)

None of those routes take in Manchester, Nottingham or Peterborough so plenty wrong with picking up the EMR service in Peterborough with a ticket from London to Liverpool.

Can you tell me what all the abbreviations mean please?

They aren't abbreviations as such - they are the names of maps (and in particular combinations of those maps) on the routeing guide applicable for journeys between London and Liverpool (as set out in the relevant document).

The maps can be viewed at http://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps

Each of the relevant maps does have a description which I set out below.

BJ - Birmingham to North Wales
BV - Birmingham to Liverpool
CH - Crewe and Chester to North Wales
EB - London Euston to Birmingham and Wolverhampton
EJ - London Euston to North Wales
EV - London Euston to Liverpool
GC - London via High Wycombe to Birmingham
ME - West Midlands to Merseyside
NC - North of Crewe - Local Services
NO - Liverpool to Manchester via Earlestown
NR - Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington
RB - Routes via Reading to Birmingham
RG - London to Reading
RJ - Routes via Reading to North Wales
RV - Routes via Reading to Liverpool
