Tomorrow 4th April is supposed to be the day when ORR release station usage estimates for 2011-12. Is this still the case or has the date been moved?

I can't believe that Dorking West is only used by 16 passengers per year..!

I think you'll find it isn't but that almost all of its users have DORKING STNS tickets for which the "credit" (presumably) goes to Dorking or to Deepdene.

Are we to assume that Brigg, with its Saturdays-only service is excluded from the list? Or did it somehow escape the bottom 10?

Pyle is still continuing to gain passenger numbers. No wonder when it has an excelletn service during the peaks.

I think you could get a further increase in passenger numbers if you continued improving the timetable

It finished an admirable 43rd from bottom: it's ranked 2490/2533! However, usage was down 1.42% at 692.

I thought these ORR figures had been totally debunked (read it on another list).?

There are issues in apportioning particularly with PTE tickets where they may have a purchase point but no destination data when sold. But the systems have been gradually refined and its now mostly based on the raw data from Lennon rather than the processed ORCATS data. This year PTE regions are being treated individually and their counting some non-pte ranger tickets they hadnt counted in previous years on the Cambrian and St Ives.

What I find the most interesting is that Reddish South and Denton are doing so well, especially as they only have one train, on a Friday morning, with now return service. It shows that if they had a proper service in both directions, they would be way up the list.

The same reason is given in the data for the encouraging increase at Dinsdale (15k in 2006 to 28k this year).

For Birmingham New Street, the increase is due to a methodology refinement rather than a genuine increase in passengers.

Any idea what this could mean? (Rice Lane)

Cause of large decrease not clear (possibly related to generic Merseyside issues)

These are the PTE level figures, note is that new methology for Centro has entries and exits has being revised upwards 5% with 5m extra PTE journeys not previously counted (increase of a third) and a large increase in New Street, this is because of research finding people in the area where using different routes for their morning and evening journeys. Theres also the suspicion that Merseyside may be being undercounted a bit as theres been a 1% fall in journeys in the pte area and just outside it and the researchers are wondering whether they introduced a new pte ticket and didnt supply the sales data for it.

PTE Tickets
PTE, Journeys, Revenues
West Midlands PTE, 10.05%, 9.77%
Greater Manchester PTE, 8.35%, 13.54%
Merseyside PTE, 3.23%, 8.42%
Tyne and Wear PTE, -1.47%, 5.70%
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, 4.62%, 7.85%
South Yorkshire PTE, 1.44%, 8.45%
West Yorkshire PTE, 5.90%, 8.67%
Average, 6.08%, 9.69%

They tried to develop a new formula for Liverpool stations group, it wasnt as sucessful as they hoped as they found the directionality was difficult to model so had to settle for just refining the apportionment ratios.

Station, number under old formula, previous split, revised split based on manual counts, revised number
Liverpool Lime Street, 11,882,144 ,32%, 37%, 13,835,314
Liverpool Central, 17,497,878, 47%, 38%, 14,209,241
Liverpool James Street, 3,524,654, 9%, 8%, 2,991,419

A little strange that I happened to check today, when I had no idea the due date for the new release was today. Highbury and Islington replaced Cardiff Central as a valid answer for the recent Pointless question regarding the top 30 most used stations.

Yay a fellow pointless friend! ;)

Richard did say that answers were correct according to last years statistics though ;)

And wow a suburban interchange replacing a capital terminal!

Interesting... Seems that LEI figures are down by around 50K... Same for LBO

Meanwhile Narborugh has gone up by approx. 18k and South Wigston has gone up by Approx 5k, which is good news on a local front.

Also interesting to note that Narborough is listed as a West Midlands PTE Urban Area Station, yet the station is located well within Leicestershire. Very interesting...

Ahh I'm a lover of statistics, so I feel like comparing stations along a line. Gonna do ECML and WCML first, will return when graphs have been computed! If anyone wants to request a line, feel free ;)

Re narborough presumably a mistake as there is absolutely nothing to do with West Midlands PTE anywhere at the station...
I would guess that the big increase at narborough is mainly on Sundays as the first train towards BHM is always packed. Why on earth is Leicester down 50 grand.

Here's the ECML in graph form, if anyone's interested :P

EDIT: Changed the graph slightly to show the stations regularly served by East Coast in a different colour

Some interesting figures on the Marshlink line. Winchelsea went from 474 to 4884, Doleham went from 3894 to 38666 and Three Oaks went up from 1540 to 6092!

For those who aren't familiar with the line, there's an hourly service from Ashford to Brighton (with a couple of daily Ashford to Hastings stoppers and the peak Rye to Ashford shuttle) and trains stop alternately at Winchelsea and Three Oaks with only seven trains a day calling at Doleham (less on Saturdays and Sundays). So we've now got a scenario where one station is served by less than half of the number of trains as two others despite having more users than those same two combined!

Does anybody know what has caused this massive increase at Doleham?

Nice graph, when the data is displayed like that its so easy to understand the passenger movement of the route.

Is this not just a symtom of the Overground becoming far more popular now than it was ever imagined? Does the info contain those who use it as an interchange(pink readers)?

Wouldn't most enthusiasts be doing the whole section and therefore buy a ticket to Guide Bridge or Stalybridge, or use a Rail Ranger ticket? The stats only pick up tickets sold which originate or terminate at a particular station.

Dunno. Wouldn't they not want a nice to/from Denton ticket, stamped, in their collection?
