Looks like the ECML has been hit by tragedy again (fatality assuming)

Morning rush hour was affected by someone being hit at Hadley Wood.

Now there is another incident of similar nature at New Barnet just in time for the evening peak.

It does seem that there are more of these instances this year.

Sympathies go to all those affected like the staff involved and family of the victims.

Big problems most of the day on the ECML, caused by 2 people being hit by trains - 1 at Hadley Wood and 1 now and the next station south of Hadley Wood, New Barnet.

Currently 60 minute delays with some trains being diverted via the Hertford Loop - thoughts as usual to the victims family, train staff and emergency services.

EDIT - Now been a 3rd PHBT today, this time at Ivybridge - between Plymouth and Newton Abbot

Are we still at nearly one fatality every day on average? It really does seem to be more than last year so far.

There were 2 on the line between Waterloo and Richmond last week within 3 hours!

When there are two right near each other on the same day, it does make you wonder...

Now this is a very basic and crude calculation based on the control logs....taking into account all types of incidents of people being struck by a train (both fatality and injury) and bodies being reported on the line.....

The period between 01/01/12 to 24/04/12 has seen a total of about 90 incidents across the network.

This is slightly up on the same period last year which saw a total of about 80 incidents.

I travelled to work in London this morning from Huntingdon, everything was fine and on time. I left KGX on the 1640 and it arrived spot on time. I guess I have been lucky by the sound of it - dodging the chaos. At least with those stations affected today you can use the Hertford loop.

Good thing the 16:47 Cambridge service from Potters Bar was a minute late enabling me to catch it - otherwise I would have had a long wait!

Aye, it but it didn't do much good! I was on the 17:40 FCC service from KGX and it was walking pace on the Hertford loop. Arrived 55 down at PBO. Not a peep from the driver over the tannoy :(

Must be this weather :s

Which weather? Most of the incidents seem to be in the south east, do you mean the rather dry weather we had in January-March, or the current seasonably damp weather? Because the rate has been pretty consistnet, hasn't it?

Not if you wanted any station between Stevenage and Alexandra Palace via Welwyn Garden City, there was nothing for nearly two hours for passengers stranded at Stevenage wanting Knebworth, Welwyn North, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield or Potters Bar.

However if you just wanted London then you were fine, ;)

Well, yes obviously, but my point is that there is a way around for those going further north. If there wasn't, it would affect many more than use just those 5 stations.

In the old days they would have set up a shuttle service from Stevenage to welwyn Garden City using a 313.

Between the parallel lines
And theres been a 4th PHBT... between newport and hereford...

Delays of up to 60 minutes due to a PHBT in the Abergavenny area, indeed, as of 2238hrs. This is according to NRE.

It's been a pretty bad day for these incidents, and my condolences go out to staff and emergency services personnel who may be affected, the victims' friends and families, and any members of the public who witnessed any of this (I am sure there must have been at least one or two, sadly).

There was ticket acceptance with local bus operators in these areas though, although it isnt a train service, it means people do at least have an alternative route.

The first fatality happened just before midday, so there wasn't a rush hour involved.
The main line was close for just over an hour. Two trains from Stevenage calling Knebworth, Welwyn North, Welwyn Garden City... were run via Hertford, but the next train ran through.

There have now been three fatalities in two days on the FCC GN route.

Yes that would have been better however if a 4 car EMU was available with driver, surely it would have been better to run the shuttle service from Stevenage to Potters Bar calling all stations least then passengers can use LUL services to continue their journey.

You could then also run a shuttle service between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City using a 3 car EMU if available with driver to spread the passenger loadings.

It's a pretty delicate subject to be making insensitive jokes about...

Apparently the shepreth one was at Harston crossing, between Foxton and Cambridge.

A joke?? What are you talking about. The weather can cause depression too, & if it was a suicide it could be the reason this person did it. Anyway, when you get held up constantly you tend to get a tad sick & tired of it & end up with very little sympathy. This subject stirs up many emotions & creates much discussion & usually ends up in the toys going out of the pram.

Before you guys get bent out of shape, can we remember that those of us who deal with these incidents often use black humour to get through the grimness of it all, so let's not have any moral high grounds please?!

Or even comments like "they should have done this" - every incident is different and the best solutions are those on the ground and those in charge.

I speak from some practical experience with these issues - .....the common thread is getting trains and passengers / freight on the move.
