The line will be closed for almost a year:
... during which it seems that no attempt is being made to provide a service over the border by road, or an improved service by other routes.

hmmm... so they're saying that they will run some services round to Milan from 1 October. News to me: they cancelled my 3rd October train! And the return leg! Passengers for start of October were informed that everything was cancelled apart from some Paris-Lyon services

and I wouldn't be optimistic about an improvement either... From what we read it seems that international trains to and from Italy are deteriorating steadily due to FS lack of cooperation.
Maybe there is an opportunity here though: might this prompt SNCF (and maybe SBB/CFF/FSS) to run coaches as far as a useful station in Italy, whether FS want it to happen or not?.

I assume TGVs are not cleared between Lausanne and Milan via the Simplon route (if there are paths available with the Gotthard diversions).
But the obvious alternative is to use SNCF to Geneva/Lausanne/Basel/Zurich and then EC trains on to Milan via whatever routes are available.

I think you've misread that - TI are running 1 more Paris-Lyon only.
The report quoted says roughly "there were 5 trains, 2 of which continued to Milan. These remain suspended."

Yes, that is the obvious alternative.

I'm pretty sure SNCF/SBB have operated TGVs to Brig in the past (somewhere in the distant recesses of what passes for a memory these days!), but the main problem would be: "Do SNCF have any TGVs that have both Swiss and Italian pantographs and signalling equipment?"

For anyone fancying an adventure, a bus does 7 return trips Monday-Saturday between Modane and Bardonecchia. Route 902 on the Torino region transport website www.extrato.it.
RRB timetables are on the TER website https://www.ter.sncf.com/auvergne-rhone-alpes/se-deplacer/fiches-horaires
with variations for other engineering work including bus all the way between Chambéry and Modane (2 hours) for some periods. Over the winter add ski traffic congestion, particularly at weekends, to the road part and you too could experience a journey from hell.

That's a decided improvement from when I last looked, when the 902 seemed to be down to 2/day (I was looking at ways to avoid the TGV supplement, but decided against.
With two buses, not connecting particularly well, it would be fiddly, but might still be as quick for Turin (not Milan though) as the detour through CH.

Autumn, Franceinfo, BBC News channel equivalent, reports:
SNCF announced on Friday 26th January ... it is hoped that rail traffic will resume this autumn.
Remote control diggers are being used.
Once the rock face is safe, expected to take until summer 2024, SNCF is planning to build protection screens then restore track and signalling. It has also taken advantage of this period to bring forward some civil engineering works originally planned for 2025.

SNCF info traffic has a PDF summarising the current 1 per day TGV-coach-TGV service with diagrams of the interchange stations:
