Humour me, but I was recently wondering if there are any adult (18+) fares left on the national rail network that are under a pound - including railcard discounts? I tried a few short distances between stations on thetrainline and haven't found anything under the figure.

You could travel outside of Zone 1 on London tube and rail services for just 95p as recently as 2012, provided you had a railcard loaded onto an Oyster card. It's been £1.00 since the 2013 fare increases and will remain so in 2015.

I know Southern Rail did a huge online sale a few years back offering something ridiculous like 80-90% off the standard price and selling tickets for literally a few pence, but when I attempted to log on the website I couldn't load it, presumably due to an overcrowded fare.

If you allow Railcard discounts then there are quite a few, for example, Devonport - Dockyard, the Exeter stations, etc.

Adult full fares I can only think of Stourbridge Town - Junction off the top of my head in addition to the Lichfield ticket.

If you include railcards then there are loads with JSA jobseekers also two together might get under a £.

It's not massively unusual tbh, what with people who live on that side of Lichfield and Streethay near LTV catching the train to get nearer the City centre. It's a fairly long walk or a quick train ride. I used to sell that ticket occasionally on train, as even at that price people wouldn't buy the ticket from the booking office as they didn't think they'd get checked between the two stations. Some didn't even know it was so cheap as they'd never brought the ticket... I sold the 25p child single once too! It'd be a funny way to get a £20 PF though, avoiding a 50p fare.

You'd also get folks travelling to or from LIC/LTV who were making journeys on the WCML who had valid tickets for the WCML bit, but hadn't thought about having a valid ticket for LIC <> LTV.

Bristol Temple Meads to Redland/Montpelier/Clifton Down is just 75p anytime single with a railcard. The railcard discount on this line is 50% rather than the normal 33%.

I imagine there will be a lot of people with a season ticket for that journey next year  Weather they actually make it is another matter :p

Matlock Bath to Matlock CDS is 60p and 70p RTN - popular fare for avoiding the walk.

People with access to LENNON will be able to find out.

There are people with such access on the forum but I don't think they would be allowed to disclose such information.

You can safely eliminate most of the south-east! Just tried the two shortest on my regular line (city thameslink to blackfriars - you can walk it in 5 mins - 2.70; and luton - luton airport parkway 2.50 -_-)

Severn Beach - Clifton Down, 75p with Railcard for 9½ miles.

Possibly the greatest distance one can travel for under a pound.

Full fare Standard Day Single Gwersyllt - Wrexham General/Wrexham Central is exactly £1.00. Makes it as easy as it can be to take the money.

Sadly I guess it'll go up with all the others on the second.

Network West Midlands Friends and Family fare is £1 - return to any station within the NWM area if accompanied by a nNetwork or nTrain season ticket holder.

Isn't the whole idea to discover the cheapest possible season ticket and purchase it (but never use it) in order to avail oneself of other associated benefits? I don't know what these might be, perhaps someone could explain.

This is generally done within the Network railcard area within which season tickets can be sold as a Gold card, which comes with various benefits. Currently I think that the cheapest season ticket within this area is Ryde Espelande to Ryde Pier at £252.

As of the 2nd of January a new extended gold card area is being created, meaning that a Lichfield T.V. to Lichfield city season (£144) will become Gold-card eligible. This though is being done at the same time as the benefits are being reduced.

Getting back to the original question, I can find the following SDS and CDS singles in the fares database post 2nd Jan. The 00000 means the route is ANY PERMITTED.

Code:
CMF	MTB	0.60	CDS	B3	00000
LIC	LTV	0.60	SDS 00000
LTV	LIC	0.60	SDS 00000
MAT	MTB	0.60	CDS	B3	00000
MTB	CMF	0.60	CDS	B3	00000
MTB	MAT	0.60	CDS	B3	00000
PRA	PTW	0.60	SDS 00000
PTW	PRA	0.60	SDS 00000
BBK	CSL	0.80	SDS 00000
CSL	BBK	0.80	SDS 00000
EWD	TLK	0.80	SDS 00000
FGH	FGW	0.80	SDS 00000
FGW	FGH	0.80	SDS 00000
TLK	EWD	0.80	SDS 00000
BER	WMC	0.90	SDS 00000
BMB	LOH	0.90	SDS 00000
LOH	BMB	0.90	SDS 00000
SBJ	SBT	0.90	SDS 00000
SBT	SBJ	0.90	SDS 00000
TAM	WNE	0.90	CDS	BX	00000
WMC	BER	0.90	SDS 00000
WNE	TAM	0.90	CDS	BX	00000

These are excluding railcard discounts.

Some interesting observations from that list.

Tamworth - Wilnecote CDS (Off-Peak) 90p, SDS (Anytime) £3.00. That's quite some discrepancy.

Bearley - Wilmcote SDS 90p, SDR £1.90. Return costing more than twice the single.

Also I am getting PRA-PTW as £1.20 SDS in both directions, not 60p. 60p is the cheapest group fare.

Oooh. That's actually from origin PRESTWICK ATRAIN, whatever that is. I should cross reference the UICs rather than CRSs for it to make sense, I suppose.
