Female guard 'assaulted' on Lincoln train carrying Leicester City fans

British Transport Police are investigating reports of an alleged assault on a female guard onboard the 08.34 Lincoln to Leicester train on Saturday.

The train was carrying around 80 Leicester City football fans who were travelling to Lincoln, despite the cancellation of the Lincoln City vs Leicester City match amidst public safety concerns.

The emergency cord onboard the train was pulled as it left the station at around 6:30pm and police officers were called to respond to the incident.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Following the emergency cord activation the train suffered damage to its brakes and had to return to the station.

“Officers then assisted in detraining the passengers and the football fans were escorted by British Transport Police on the next available service, the 19.35 Lincoln to Nottingham service.

“We have received reports of an alleged assault on a female guard onboard the 18.34 Lincoln to Leicester service, which we are currently investigating.

“There were no other significant incidents on the rail or train system before or after the match."

Don't know the details but it's possible the EBS (Emergency Brake Supply) was raised depending on circumstances. This would require the train to be taken out of service at the first suitable location.

Although I am a football fan (of neither team I might add) this irresponsible act, vindicates the Police's view that the match should be called off. Clearly they had got wind of something happening, if the match went ahead.

Somone purporting to have witnessed it all on board has posted a comment on the Leicester Mercury

If true that all the "fans" were all locked in together with no policing plus alcohol , then surely this was going to be a predicatble outcome

Although it was not the railways fault that the game was cancelled by the Police, perhaps they should have made an exception and announced they would refund all travel tickets to lincoln form Leicester
Better that than end up with this scenario which would surely have cost more in delays etc

“So. Facts.

I went to Lincoln as a Leicester fan because we'd already booked the train tickets. And, yes, we did visit the cathedral. I have the pencil to prove it. I spoke to others from Leicester and they also went because the game was cancelled so late that they'd booked the train. One large group were on a wake for a friend who died recently. So, no, we were not 'all there to cause trouble'.

We found no problem and the Lincoln people were all lovely. However, the lack of a game did mean there was more drinking and Leicester fans were dispersed across the city more. We did visit a few pubs but only saw city fans in the first one.

The train home was the one that got stopped. I got split from my friends who were directed to thr rear carriage for football fans. This carriage was locked and the atmosphere became more and more raucous. After all, it was a group of drunken men, locked in a train carriage with no staff. A person sat behind my friends pulled the cord and the train stopped. I went to talk to the train staff who were quite rattled but very polite and helpful. I was in the phone to my friends when the cord was pulled, so went to tell them what had happened. One of the staff said she'd been bruised by some 'fans' but don't know how.

No excuse for the behaviour but maybe it would have been easier to monitor if the game had gone ahead. For me, Lincoln was lovely.

They unlocked the door to the rear carriage so my friends could join me.

The rear carriage was detached and The rest of the train carried on.”

No need to book this in advance (a CDR is only £13.50) but people have it drilled into them by the TOCs that you need to book in advance, so they will have done. The TOCs don't want to give up their £10 'admin fee' rights, and people don't want to get only £3.50 back from a £13.50 ticket, so it was predictable that some people would still go and spend all day drinking. Pathetic, not excusable, but entirely predictable!

Out of interest and not working on the network, are the regular police allowed to patrol on board a train or would it have to be BTP

My understanding is BTP are regular police officers just like any other police officer with no more or fewer rights, just that they have more training on the complex laws relating to the railways so are usually best suited to dealing with rail incidents. I may of course be wrong.

It was the returning 18:34 from Lincoln

Lincolnshire police cancelled the "friendly"on the grounds of trouble predicted. It seems a serious error of judgement to then allow "fans" to then travel to Lincoln, get drunk all day and not then escort them back to Leicester but for whoever it was to just "lock" them in the train for the return journey.

Had this been the 1970s, the coach could well have been on fire or as a minimum trashed
