When using a ticket with a Maltese Cross, travelers are required to use an appropriate route on the Underground. On a journey from Ramsgate to Banbury via HS1, would taking DLR & Underground from Stratford International to Marylebone be an "appropriate route"?

Changing at Stratford/Canning Town and then the cross-platform interchange at Baker Street? Or something else? Rather convoluted, but allowable!

In practice the nature of LU is such that if you enter at a reasonable station and leave at a reasonable station (I think there is a list, right?), there will be no concern with regard to exactly what you do while inside the system, provided you don't do anything obviously and glaringly stupid like throwing a quick return trip to Amersham in.

Did love the footnote saying you are allowed to walk!

"Some London termini stations are within easy walking distance of one another and tickets showing the cross-London Ԡ' symbol are valid to make the connection between them at street level."

In practice yes, but if you're travelling on a National Rail ticket with a maltese cross, the rules do say the crossing has to be appropriate. What is appropriate isn't defined though.

Depends on what the OP has in mind. Stratford Int - (DLR) - Stratford Regional - (Central) - Oxon - (Bakerloo) - Marylebone can hardly be said to be unreasonable.

Thanks for all your responses. I don't really doubt that the Underground/DLR portion of the journey (using the most direct route) would be OK if the ticket was checked on the Underground, my hesitation is on whether there might be trouble exiting from HS1 at Stratford and whether a Ramsgate-Banbury ticket would open the barriers there (if closed - they often aren't). I don't want to get into an argument with the gateline staff although I think a super off peak return (restriction PU) allows break of journey in any case - but what would be the situation if break of (outward) journey was not allowed? To take a more extreme case, a Ramsgate - Leicester ticket would also have a Maltese Cross (to allow travel via London Bridge/Charing Cross) but would it be "appropriate" to travel on the Underground/DLR between Stratford International and St Pancras rather than just changing platforms at St Pancras?

In this specific case you can sidestep the Crossing London issue. Stratford International and Stratford London are both members of the Stratford London Routeing Group. The walk via Westfield shopping station is also an official walking interchange.

Any mapped route in the National Routeing Guide via Stratford Intl and HS1 to London will be shown as a line between Stratford London Group and London Group, thus it would also be valid to alight at Stratford Intl, walk to Stratford London and take a train from there to Liverpool Street. Being an official interchange, this does not count as a break of journey so would be permitted even if the ticket type forbids break of journey. Thus it sidesteps discussions both the break of journey and the reasonable routes for crossing London when at the HS1 gateline in Stratford Intl (assuming the gateline staffer has even heard of the Routeing Guide...)

I do loads of journeys from Kent to East Anglia which are route +Any Permitted. I've never had one refused at Stratford Int or Regional.

Yes. It would be valid to use the 'classic' lines too. There is no requirement to use the fastest route (on the contrary... see other threads on that subject! )

What's wrong with H&C from St. Pancakes to Baker Street and Bakerloo/walk to Marylebone?

It's an unusual walking interchange, in that the station information for Stratford International on NRE describes it in some detail, but the ATOC timetable feed (as reproduced on this page) doesn't mention it, only listing a transfer by DLR.

This means that journey planners only show routes which go from one to the other with DLR, and don't show anything the opening hours listed in the timetable feed for it.
