On wikipedia it states that London Underground has 270 stations. However after counting them all i have only found 269. I have gone through the entire list and the entire map and can only find 269. I have even copied and pasted the list in to a spreadsheet to make sure i was counting the stations correctly.

Are they counting Paddington as two stations?

Could they be counting 2 Paddingtons? Praed Street/Bishops Road

Yes that could well be what it is. It just confuses me that they list Paddington as just one station but list Edgware Road and Hammersmith as two stations.

I used random.org just for counting. This is the result:

I have just tried that and it has come up with 269. Were you including a second Paddington when you tried?

I just copied and pasted there.

Actually, my mistake. I was counting on a A4 printed tube map and with Edgware Road and Hammersmith twice I have exactly 269. Maybe Aldwych station it was counted there.

Two Edgware Roads. Two Hammersmiths. Two Paddingtons. 270 stations.

Anything else is wrong.

Now I'm confused - surely there's three Paddingtons?

Praed Street
Bishop's Road
Bakerloo

Praed Street and Bakerloo are different lines serving the same station. You don't have to go outside the barriers to get between the two, whereas you have to leave the ticket line to get from there to Bishop's Road.

Do the two Paddingtons have entirely separate staff, as do Hammersmith and Edgware Road? If they do, I would say they are definitely two stations. Of course, there are some who would say Charing Cross is two stations, neither of them bearing that name, but rather Strand and Trafalgar Square. Look it up if you don't understand. Strand is where I was forced by the District Inspector I was with to chuck two excellent-quality buskers out of the corridors. Later, in more enlightened times, a classical ensemble played there with great success.

Would that be because LU doesn't own T5, it just runs there?

I dont think they own these stations either.

Kew Gardens

I believe that these are all owned by Network Rail.

Kensington (Olympia) should be added to that list.
Barking should be added to the list, although it has an LU station staff presence.

to cloud things a bit;
Ealing Broadway
Gunnersbury
Harlesden
Harrow & Wealdstone
Kensal Green
Kenton
Kew Gardens
North Wembley
Queens Park
South Kenton
Stonebridge Park
Stratford
Wembley Central
have an LU station staff presence and the platform roundels are LU red.

London Underground manage all the intermediate stations between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone, inclusive.

Are not Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury London Overground rather than LU (albeit also served by the latter?). Before privatisation, East Putney, Southfields and Wimbledon Park on the Wimbledon branch of the District Line were owned and run by BR, despite no BR trains ever stopping there. It was possible to buy through tickets from them to any station in the country.

They didn't used to be. I remember them in Southern Region green; though I think even recently they had BR/whoever took over the NLL branding.

East Putney can still have nr trains stop there during engineering works I believe

So Jay foreman's song is wrong then as he only mentions those three once. Mind you, I suppose one could argue he needs to rewrite it to include all the Tramlink stops since that is now shown as being part of the LU map.

What about Bank and Monument - two stations with a paid-side access between them or one station with two names?

And will Crossrail actually reduce the number of stations by similarly connecting Farringdon/Barbican and Moorgate/Liverpool Street? (Though it will add many more elsewhere)

They are LU stations, as indicated by the red platform roundels (rather than orange) and LU station staff.

Kew Gardens can sell NR tickets, which suggests that it is LO (or they could in the summer when I bought a ticket from boundary 6 to Maideenhead)

Ex Silverlink stations Gunnersbury and Kew Gardens, plus Harrow/Wealdstone to Queens Park (except Willesden Jcn) are managed by LU, but retain the former ticket issuing facilities provided by Silverlink, as they are regulated under Schedule 17.

I can't prove this, but I believe there was a time when Elephant and Castle was regarded as two stations.

If we include pre-nationalisation then that could be said of many z1 interchange stations - Charing Cross was three for example

They didn't used to be. I remember them in Southern Region green; though I think even recently they had BR/whoever took over the NLL branding.

Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury certainly were B.R. stations staffed by B.R. personnel. One of my jobs as Assistant Station Manager Richmond circa 1981/2 was to undertake the daily bookwork and accountancy at the two stations before collecting the cash/cheques and paying it into Barclay's Bank just outside Kew Gardens station. The chief clerk in the ticket office at Kew Gardens went by the wonderful Dickensian sounding name of Quizilbash.
As someone else has mentioned, Wimbledon Park, Southfields and East Putney were unique in being B.R. owned and staffed stations but - in normal daily operations - only being served by L.U. trains.
There used to be an instruction in the Sectional Appendix with reference to the signals between Richmond and Gunnersbury and Wimbledon and East Putney warning of the slow operation of the signals due to them being interlocked with the L.U. trainstop apparatus.
Happy days!
