Had 831 yesterday. Have to say I was very impressed. It may be early days so one should expect the units to be smart, but the interior looks to have been designed by someone who actually travels a lot on these trains. Plenty of tables with unobstructed views, plug sockets, pleasing interior colour scheme - very nice indeed. I've always thought that with a better air con, better toilet and quieter engines that the 158 would make a good long distance unit, with voyager engines underneath.

On the other hand, the Cheltenham - Maesteg the other way was a 142 :P

Unfortunately our 158's are still fitted with the very-rubbish working air-con that never likes to work so the windows are kept open!...it's a great atmosphere onboard the refurbished 158's!...not had a complaint as yet! :D

Gammer seats without the big headrests? What a good idea, privacy, but hopefully less claustrophobia.

Travelled on a FGW 158 on Wednesday with the windows open. They have had 22 years to sort this problem out.

What a brilliant refurb that interior is so light and airy this should be a bench mark for other projects. Is the new livery going to be like Scotland with the new operators name stuck on ?Hopefuly stations will follow once the EU funding problems are overcome .Other operators should go and see these units and take notice .

The livery looks fantastic except for the nice blank area where the WAG symbol should be (due to WAG deciding to change their logo once the refurb had started)...WOOPS!

Thank you for the update. How come ATW ended up with 4 different liveries at the same time? Okay, I understand that the new two-shade blue is soon to become the sole colour scheme, and that the silver units were inherited from Wales & West - but how did the Arriva turquoise and cream scheme end up in two different versions? It must take a lot of work to apply the colours in a different pattern, so why did the one unit get special treatment? Apologies if this question has been answered previously, but I couldn't find an explanation.

It's a lovely interior refurb, shame the money could'nt be found to spend on the oily bits as the ATW 158 is the most unreliable fleet of trains in the country.

It was only a minor name change, the only thing that has changed on the logo was the dropping of the word "Assembly". Surely it isn't so difficult for Arriva to accommodate as I'm sure the Welsh Government did plan the change sometime in advance.

I honestly didn't know you could still open the windows. They look sealed shut. Stupid question, but how do you open them?

and then you can't close them :|
the air-con on the ATW 158's are rubbish, hence the windows are open but the occasional ATW unit (830 last check) had working air-con but a useless guard opened the window...therefore breaking the air-con... WOOPS!

If you fitted voayger engines you may as well build a new train as the Voyagers have a diesel engine driving electric traction motors, the brakes will need to be enhanced because of the extra weight there are just so many mods that would need to be done it wouldn't be worth it. The class 158's with the cummings engines are a lot better that the perkins both of response and power but the Perkins engines are reasonably reliable and a good work horse. maybe MTU engines would be better but once again too much messing around changing them.

The 158 is a properly engineered unit and has performed well over the years ,newer units tend to detirioate quickly. The refurb looks good and should be adopted as a standard for all ATW units.Just that Arriva would do the same to their buses!

Comment from Yesterdays North Wales news board

"Only one Class 158, 158 819, now remains in silver Wales and Borders livery, and it is due to enter the LNWR works at Crewe for refurbishment and repainting in Arriva livery on 10 September. "

And good riddance to them...you saw one of those silver 158s pull up and you knew that you were in for a grim journey with filth ingrained seats and carpets.

Such a shame Northern don't have the funds for a similar refurbishment of their 158s, some are in a disgusting state and the toilets absolutely stink - I don't remember this being a problem a few years ago, does anybody know what was changed?

Only took Arriva well... ten years

I'd expect to see ATW passenger satisfaction rocket after some very good refurbishments on the class 153, 158 and 175. Where can I find detailed pics of the refurbished 153 interior as photos seem hard to find?

Have all the class 153 refurbishments been completed?
