Negotiations are in hand for Midland Classic to take over Arriva's work in Burton, except for the Coalville/Leicester and Derby routes. MC had already applied for 20 additional discs and an OC at Wetmore Road.

This will of course mean Julian Peddle re-acquiring some services he previously sold to Arriva.

BURTON's main bus company is in talks to sell the majority of its operation in the town – sparking fears that jobs could be under threat.

Bosses at Arriva have confirmed to the Mail that the company is talking to Midland Classic – the other firm which supplies routes across the town - to sell the 'majority' of its Burton operation.

The news has provoked fears of job losses in the town as the Wetmore Road base is all but now in the hands of Midlands Classic after the Traffic Commissioner granted permission for it to add the depot to its portfolio.

However, Arriva area managing director Simon Mathieson told the Mail he was 'confident' no jobs were under threat.

He said: "We are currently in talks with Midland Classic about the potential sale of the majority of our Burton business to them.

Back to the future, Burton will go predominantly yellow once again!

You don't have to look far to see that Julian Peddle and Arriva have often worked very closely together. This is a natural progression, and particularly relevant given that his empire of Centrebus, and various other smaller operators, really started out around the Burton on Trent area.

Indeed, they have done in other areas as well - I seem to recall the Lutonian being some kind of cooperation between them, and MK Metro of course was sold to Arriva.

Notice Arriva are to continue operating the x38 from Derby and the 9, 9a, 9e and 29 from according to the Burton Mail Coalville. Where is the depot in Coalville these days I thought it had closed.

Coalville operations are at Roberts Coaches yard. It is treated as an outstation of Thurmaston.

It is very much the case that JP has worked with British Bus and Arriva and is inextricably linked with area since being Traffic Manager at Stevos.

Built that business up with the purchase of a few smaller firms and filling the gaps vacated by PMT before buying East Staffs DC operation. Then supported the Midland Fox privatisation by taking Swad depot and, of course, heading into West Mids, Potteries etc. Then selling to BB when WMT started competing.

Also, he was part of the consortium that, with British Bus, purchased Rhondda from the National Welsh administrators.

Don't forget Milton Keynes, Huntingdon & District etc etc - more recently High Peak, South Lancs Travel, Select etc etc

The same thing happened when D&G Bus purchased Wardle from Arriva.

D&G Bus also purchased most of Bakerbus' operations. I'm not sure if any routes which transferred in the Macclesfield area were ex-Stevensons routes.

I didn't realise Julian Peddle was involved with Midland Classic.

Interesting to see this development, and hopefully will secure the future of Burton's bus services.

Arriva Midlands North have today deregistered all Burton's routes from 28th August and Arriva Midlands have registered the 9 and X38. Presumably MC will register the others in the next day or two.

Yes, I think the 28/8 date was only finalised last week.

Arriva Derby to operate the X38 and Arriva's outstation at Coalville to operate all of the 9/29 group rather than just part of it as at present.

Midland Classic registrations and variations to their services are now appearing on visa today.
