Quick question, just interested.

Last Saturday evening I was on the 20.52 Arriva service from Manchester Piccadilly to Chester diverted (non stop) via Altrincham and the Mid Cheshire line.
Before departure the guard announced that tickets marked via Altrincham were not valid on that service and would be excessed.
Was that correct as the train actually passed through Altrincham? The Avantix database gives the cheaper tickets as "route Altrincham" not "Northern only".

Not involved personally. My combination of a Greater Manchester Wayfarer and a return half of a Chester - Newton le Willows ticket was accepted cheerfully.

The guard was incorrect. A "Via Altrincham" ticket is valid on any train that passes through Altrincham.

You may wish to contact ATW and ask them why the guard gave this wrong piece of advice, and what will be done to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
