For anyone wondering what's up with Arriva Yorkshire's 47-bus share of the West Yorkshire ZEBRA 1 scheme, I found this (from three weeks ago) on the Travel West Yorkshire Forum:
After speaking with senior management this afternoon I can confirm NO NEW BUSES are on order at this current time. The only vehicles that are maybe due are 5 more Pulsars from Liverpool to see off the Tempos. The Electrics are still in the pipeline but until BI is redeveloped then they will not be making an appearance anytime soon.

Penfold

So it appears the figures on West Yorkshire ZEBRA 1 bus orders (Hansard, 19 February 2024) are wrong; they implied Arriva had ordered their share.

I presume BI is Belle Isle (Wakefield) depot.

It appears a structural issue of some kind has done for Wakefield depot.

Arriva Yorkshire headquarters and Wakefield bus depot permanently closed due to ‘structural problem’

By Tony Gardner

Published 17th Sep 2024, 14:17 BST

Arriva has permanently closed a bus depot which houses its Yorkshire head offices due to serious structural problems.

The operator took emergency action following the discovery in an engineering building at Wakefield bus depot.

The Local Democracy Report Service understands most of the site will need to be demolished.

The site, on Barnsley Road, serves as Wakefield’s main bus depot, providing garage and engineering facilities, as well as offices for Arriva Yorkshire.

Arriva said it will “work to minimise disruption” to services until replacement facilities are provided.

Temporary measures have been put in place to park vehicles at the city’s bus station and to use other depots at Castleford, Dewsbury and Heckmondwike.

Some buses will continue to be parked outside the Barnsley Road depot as part of interim arrangements.

Office staff will be relocated to Wakefield bus station.

It is also understood that negotiations are taking place over the possible use of land close to the city centre as a temporary base.

Arriva is expected to submit a planning application to Wakefield Council to carry out emergency demolition work to clear the site for redevelopment.

A spokesperson for Arriva Yorkshire said: “Whilst preparing for improvements to our Wakefield depot, a structural problem in the engineering building was discovered.”

“Safety is our number one priority.”

“As soon as we were made aware of the issue we took immediate steps in line with independent expert advice and we are relocating affected colleagues to work from other nearby locations.”

“Engineers and head office staff are being relocated.”

“We will work to minimise disruption to our services during this time.”

Yes it’s been ongoing for a few months now with buses being outstationed in the bus station and fuelling at other depots each night. Amazingly they’ve managed to keep the service running!

Whereabouts in City Centre would the temporary base be and how temporary would it be?

Is there anywhere else that could be used as HQ for Arriva Yorkshire, could any of the other depot's be used?

Where will drivers book on while this disruption lasts? Has Wakefield Bus Station got the facilities for this?

I'm surprised that Arriva is keeping their York Urban Zone tickets given that they only operate 2 services in York (42, 415) on a single route out of York (Fulford Road towards Designer Outlet and A19).

Castleford, Heckmondwike is about 9 miles , Dewsbury about 7 miles from Wakefield

Due to the issues with Wakefield, they’ve started changing the legal lettering on Arriva Yorkshire buses

It’s now ARRIVA YORKSHIRE LTD, 1 ADMIRAL WAY, DOXFORD INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PARK, SUNDERLAND, SR3 3XP

Arriva has announced it will not bid for routes commissioned by Local Authorities in West Yorkshire, when these routes come up for bidding in February:
After struggling to deliver services reliably in Yorkshire recently, Arriva will not be rebidding for some routes commissioned by local transport authorities when they expire in February. We will focus on the delivery of our remaining services, rather than running these contracts tendered by local transport authorities.

This measure is essential to improve services for customers given an ongoing shortage of drivers, despite our having recruited more drivers in the region. Further changes are being finalised and will be announced in the coming weeks. We will make sure our customers know about those updates as soon as possible.

Kim Cain, area director for Arriva Yorkshire said: “We’re sorry that you, our customers and communities, haven’t received the service you rightly expect from us.
“We’re determined to improve things, which is why we’re making these changes and we’ll keep you updated with any further news as soon as we’re able to.
“We’re working in partnership with the local transport authorities to ensure that the impact is minimised.”

The following services are affected from 22 February:
• Services 21/22 Seacroft – Castleford and 571 Halifax - Shelf: The contracts we hold are due to end on 22 February so it’s likely they’ll be taken over by other operators.
• Service 212 Dewsbury - Wakefield: The last day of operation of this service will be 22 February and other operators have been asked to bid for the contract.

Additional changes are:
• Service 51 Doncaster - Norton: We will reduce the frequency of this route from every 30 minutes to hourly from 8 December. Evening and Sunday trips on this service will be run by Goodfellow Travel from the same date.
• School services: We will be making some changes, but it’s important to note that all children who currently travel with us to school will continue to be able to travel by bus. We will be contacting individual schools to let them know of any revised arrangements in the coming weeks.

Further announcements about any changes will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed.

Looks like Selby Depot isn't affected by this. Some big gains to be made by other operators.

The 212 is an odd route really- I used to use it regularly to travel between Batley and Wakefield as that section of the route is pretty direct and coincidentally avoids many of the traffic blackspots in the area... Though nobody would use it for the full route to Dewsbury, as it goes all round the houses between Batley and Dewsbury. It also used to run later with the last journey out of Wakefield being around 2200. Now it's around 1930.
Hopefully another operator will take it on, as it is the only bus service for a number of settlements between Wakefield and Batley.

The 212 would be a good one for Station Coaches I’d expect

Whereas in regards to the 571, Arriva have only run it for one contract period, it was always run by First and their predecessors before then

Runs Doncaster to Norton via Askern with odd journeys extending to Whitley. Most run dead between Norton & Selby. Not sure why Arriva have kept it & it now not being a First service or even Stagecoach. Usually carries good loadings out of Doncaster for it’s slow run to Norton via Bentley & Skellow.

The fact that it has good loadings will be why Arriva has kept it! They were an established operator on that corridor, having run the 405 and 408/409 services for years. The Doncaster end of the routes were clearly profitable even if the sections to Selby and Ponte weren't, so it isn't surprising that they wanted to continue running that bit. Most buses spend most of the day on the route, so 15 miles of dead mileage each way at the start and end of the day is no big deal in the context of 4 return trips making 8 hours in service – plenty of far less profitable routes in rural areas have that and more.

Yeah, I could see Station Coaches going for it... Or Longstaff of Mirfield who bizarrely only operate a single public route (205 from Mirfield to Dewsbury) and have done for decades. Always surprised me they never seem to bid for any other routes as their vehicles are always well turned out- so you'd think they'd be successful if they did bid. They seem to only do school services though, other than the 205.

Arriva Yorkshire have announced a series of changes from 5 January:
The bus operator has been working in partnership with the Local Transport Authorities and is making targeted changes to the network and timetable which will come into effect in January. The changes are being made so the operator can better deliver the reliable services that customers in the region deserve.

While the changes will result in a limited service reduction in some areas, Arriva has worked alongside the Local Transport Authorities to minimise disruption for customers.

Despite recruiting more than 300 new drivers since the start of the year, these measures are essential to improve services for customers given the ongoing shortage of drivers.

Following a comprehensive review of the usage of every journey on the network, some of the least used journeys will no longer run, and some have been amended.

Kim Cain, area director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “We know how important our bus services are to the communities in Yorkshire we serve and we are sorry that they have not been performing at the levels that passengers rightly expect.

“We are determined to change this and have been working closely with Local Transport Authority partners to develop a robust plan with service changes so that we are able to deliver a reliable timetable that our passengers can have confidence in.”

In reference to driver recruitment, Kim added: “We’re always on the lookout for hard working and committed people to join the Arriva Yorkshire team. If you’re over 18, have a driving licence and are looking for a rewarding career with a clear path for development, then we want to hear from you.”

The services that will change are being registered by the Traffic Commissioner, which is the usual process, and will update customers with specific timetable information soon.

Arriva can confirm now that the following services will be affected by the changes, which take place on January 5, 2025.

Service 122 will change to run between Wakefield and Ossett only. Another bus operator provides services between Ossett and Gawthorpe covering the section that Arriva will no longer be serving. Because this bus operator does not provide a service on Sundays or evenings, Arriva will continue running to Gawthorpe at these times.

Service 135/136 Pontefract to Chequerfield will now run every 30 minutes rather than every 15 minutes.

Service 164 will now connect Leeds and Selby every hour (currently every two hours), replacing most journeys on service 64.

Service 444/446 will now run from Leeds City Bus Station instead of City Square.

Evening journeys which were added to some timetables in February and July continue to carry low numbers of passengers. As a result, evening frequencies will revert to previous service levels.
Some school services will change, but everyone who travels with us to school will still be able to catch a bus.

Earlier this month, Arriva announced it will not be rebidding for some routes commissions by local transport authorities.

Other bus operators have been found to run tendered services 21/22 Seacroft – Castleford and 571 Halifax – Shelf from 23 February. Service 212 Dewsbury – Wakefield will be run by an alternative bus operator from 5 January.

Is it known publicly who will operate the 21/22, 571 and 212?

It was only July they increased the timetable of many of the routes from hourly to half hourly in the evening and now they're basically ripping that up and going back to how it was!

Although I can see why they're struggling for drivers based on chatting with some drivers who basically have to work long hours into the late evening then try and get a few hours sleep then back out at the crack of dawn the next day! Far less hassle to just do another driving job for more money and less/no hassle with customers

One silver lining for us in Selby is that apparently the service to Leeds '164' will now be hourly rather than what it describes as two-hourly (it is in fact sporadic). However the devil will be in the detail of how Sherburn industrial estate is served, given that the majority of '64' services will be withdrawn.

Given that they're saying another operator and not yet naming names, I'm guessing it's up for tender from WYCA and hasn't been confirmed yet? Have there been any tenders advertised? Not sure where WYCA advertise them nowadays?
