Ladies & Gents,

I'm due to sit my psychometric assessments for a second time towards the end of this month; the first time, I passed all elements except for the ATAVT (Vienna System) test and the MMI (which I didn't get to sit, having failed the ATAVT...).

Does anybody have any useful practice links/recommendations for practice software/anything else which will help me to pass the ATAVT? Admittedly, I wasn't fully prepared last time and also didn't know what to expect at the ATAVT, but I still want to be in the very best position to pass it this time - last chance afterall!

Thanks for any help,

J

There's a few examples of it on YouTube. From what I've read it's best to go with your instinct but don't guess - you get marked down more for ticking something that wasn't there than missing something that was......... I've not done it before but have the pleasure of doing so on Wednesday!

Thanks Owen! That's good advice. I've debated buying the software from either traineetraindriver.com or how2become, but I've heard mixed reviews about both!
Good luck for Wednesday, keep us posted!

Doesn’t really help but I felt like I guessed my way through it & I passed, maybe it tests you on a subconscious level, who knows

I found with this one that it is very easy to second guess yourself and it is important to stick to your initial reaction. Also by remembering the general image and thinking about what is generally expected in such a scenario helps you. Be confident and I think you will surprise yourself at how much you see in that split second.

There is a YouTube video of the test in question.
I used this prior to doing my tests, and it was pretty accurate in regards to the pictures shown in the actual test.
be warned though... the actual test seemed a lot quicker!!!

Whats with the face? They expect you to actually see everything when it flashes.up for half a second? Just be smart and tick everything you won't be disappointed
Surely if I tick everything, everytime, I'll fail... As everything won't have appeared everytime.

Thank Timpg. You don't have a link to the video in question, do you? I've watched one or two which show the Vienna System but haven't found any which show the images.

As an aside, does anybody know how long the images are actually displayed for in the actual test? I haven't been able to find this out anywhere?

I would also say its important to stick to your gut reaction. Of memory, nearly everyone of them has a road sign in it. I certainly would not reccomend ticking them all as that would most certainly fail you, especially as each photo doesnt have everything in it.
Personally, I found the vienna test the hardest one purely for the fact its gut reaction and a bit of chance/guess work.

Yeah, I totally agree. The only reassurance is that people have gone back for their second shot and have passed; gives me some encouragement at least.

Out off interest on clip 3 is a small error , iff you pause it for a double check you will actually see that there is a pedestrian in the clip as well on the right hand side corner on their own.

I must admit I did test myself a few times on this video and I noticed he made an error.
This kinda boosted my confidence a bit as I thought it would be fairly easy prior to the tests...... I didn’t account for the fact that when doing it for real... that it seems massively quicker!!
If I was to fail any of the tests I thought it was going to be this one, but I passed nevertheless.

Sorry that you fell short on the ATAVT yet you have done ace passing all the other written & computer tests. Kudos! I sat my psychometrics today (1st time) & I too passed all other Bourdon/written/computer tests but FLUNKED my ATAVT. Feel really down! I sat mine in LEEDS today & my feedback from the administrators was that the Bourdon, GLOP, DIALS, Tones, Directory, Tones with Directory, WAVF (Grey square) & 2 hand co-ordination was ALL at the ENHANCED standards. I was sent home early though due to a failure with the photos test. The reason for my post is to offer my own perspective on why I think I flunked that single test: I believe my mistake was that I adopted a strategy of marking things that I did not see yet thought "must have been there", eg clicking on road signs " I did not SEE them but surely they must have been there" due to worrying that I had not seen them yet they were there. IF & IF I get another chance through the recruitment process my point is is to only mark down what I KNOW FOR SURE what I have seen rather than to fall into trap of adding items on basis that I thought they were surely were there despite me not 100% sure of seeing them. A catastrophic error of judgement. Note to self is ONLY mark what I 100% saw. Incidentally from my group today nobody passed. Brutal. Best wishes.

I wished I had read this post before today... You are right: DO NOT GUESS! I fell into this trap & I got sent home early. Every other test I passed at enhanced standards. Honestly, ALL other tests I walked, no problems. Dead easy. Miles easier than practice material. Gutted. My perspective: Mark what you see; don't presume things are there that you don't see.

Pal, was your assessment from the Northern applications for Leeds? From September?

Hi Pabloid, so sorry to hear this! It's really deflating, but huge well done on passing the other tests to the enhanced standard! That's quite an achievement.

At least you know what to expect with the ATAVT next time?
Do you imagine that, if you're shown an image which contains for instance all 5 of the objects you're looking for, but you only mark 3 of them, that you still score for the objects you did find and mark? Or do you think that image would be classed as a fail, as you failed to mark all 5 objects?

I'm nervous about this test more than any of the others. I have mine on Thursday....

My app was from Apr this year. For Northern. For Manchester but assessment done in Leeds. Great set up there & I have no complaints. I guessed that things were in the ATAVT (photos) that were not there. Trust initial judgement & don't add/guess what you don't see.

Ta mate! A tough comedown today...From the benefit from my experience today plus what I have learned it is better to miss a bike/road sign rather than to assume you have seen it. I am kicking myself for adopting the strategy that "it was there" yet not genuinely seeing it. If you see it then mark it. DO NOT presume it was there. You know, the suite of tests are there to be passed & the ATAVT ought not to be any more difficult YET I fell into trap of assuming I had missed items so I foolishly guessed & added more. So sore this evening. The test day is great, & you'll be pleasantly surprised that your brain is not warped into oblivion. I flunked ONE element and smashed all others & I know why I blew it. Please let this forum how you get on. Come on....you'll crush it pal!!

Also Pabloid, can you remember roughly how many images you were shown?
Lol. Loads! Way more than I expected. I would say about 16-20 images. I was expecting 10. I so wish I had said to myself " say/mark what you see" & nothing else." Adding "just in case I missed it road signs etc" sent me home to a disappointed wife & kids. ** At the end of the day, you know what, I made this test harder than it should be** All other tests were a doddle so i should have treated this one as such and simply marked what I could see in the 0.7 secs instead of pretending that more should be seen. me = fool. Not hard, you will do it JRE.

Don't be too hard on yourself, mate!
It's a difficult test. You fully know what to focus on now, and how to do better next time.

Out of interest, did they give you any feedback after your ATAVT? Or was it simply that you had failed it?

I'm wondering if I'll need to resit the other two computerised tests again (the grey square and the 2-hand coordination) or whether it'll just be the ATAVT and (HOPEFULLY..!) the MMI.

If I can give you one piece of advice.. Keep your head up, and get applying again. The application process is a long one (made even longer with Covid), so get your application in nice and early and by the time your 6 months is up, you'll probably only be a couple of months away from being invited to do the assessments again.

As I understand it you cannot reapply until 6 months have passed from the date you have failed the assessment.

I had a second application in 2 months afterwards, I was just sure to mention (on the section where it asks if you've previously sat the OPC Assessments) when, and the date from which I could resit.

Yeah, I guess they've realised it can take a good 6 months from initial application to sitting the OPC.

I just wish we weren't restricted to two tries. Pressure!

JRE - ta for your message mate!
Facilitator was crystal clear with me yesterday. I only sit the ATAVT, & hopefully MMI. He said that WAVF & 2Hand test were enhanced pass. He looked confused as to how i managed to eff the ATAVT up so badly given the other tests were breezed.

That was exactly the response my assessor had back in August. Failed the 2 hand coordination after passing everything else to enhanced standard. Not too long for me to wait until I can sit mine again.

Where abouts in Leeds was your assessment? I applied for Northern too, but noticed last week that Northern were advertising for an Assessment Centre Team Leader which suggests that Northern are moving away from using OPC and doing their testing in-house, if they haven’t already.

That's good news; hopefully only the ATAVT and the MMI (...Positive thinking...) for me then!
I've noticed on the very back pages of the documents they sent out with the OPC invite, it says that in the computer tests (unlike in the written tests) you're marked down for any incorrect answers.. So definitely best not to guess. I'll try answering only what I know I've definitely seen, see how I do.

Out of curiosity, was parking available at the OPC in Leeds?
