Normally the following tend to be worked by a class 153:

05:19 Shrewsbury - Swansea - Newport (arr 10:37)
10:55 Newport - Swansea (arr 12:17)
13:16 Swansea - Shrewsbury (Arr 17:10)
18:05 Shrewsbury - Swansea (22:05)
22:32 Swansea - Cardiff (arr 23:37)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The Radyr - Cardiff Central - Coryton cityline services along with the Cardiff Queen Street - Cardiff Bay services should also be worked by class 153's

Two 153s are used on the City Line in Cardiff
One is used on the Cardiff Bay Line (although this may be a 142/143/150 now as two 153s have gone to the City Line)

2F46 1540 Ebbw Vale Parkway to Bridgend is booked for a 153+158.

The Crewe to Shrewsbury stopper is also normally a 153.

And in general they strengthen other services too. Let me know if and when you're travelling and I'll PM you a list of services they're on.

I believe the 153 are diagrammed as follows Monday-Saturday;

Diagram 1

0519 Shrewbury-Newport
1055 Newport-Swansea
1316 Swansea-Shrewbury (1314 Saturdays?)
1805 Shrewbury-Swansea
2232 Swansea-Cardiff (2220 on Saturdays)

Diagram 2

0714 Cardiff-Swansea
0916 Swansea-Shrewsbury
1405 Shrewsbury-Swansea
1821 Swansea-Shrewsbury

The other HOW diagram (0434 Swansea-Shrewsbury and 0900 return, then Swanline) is a 150.

Diagram 3

Crewe-Shrewsbury local services

Diagram 4 and 5

Cardiff City Line

Diagram 6

Cardiff Bay Line

Diagram 7

Cardiff-Ebbw Vale?

I think thats it.

I think City Line has 3 diagrams - 2 153s and a pacer

Keep an eye out for them on Sundays too running up to Manchester usually strengthening 150s. (Any combo of 150+150, 150+153 and 150+153+153 have all been seen)

The 153s on the City Line (2) diagrams came from Pembroke Dock workings in a straight swap with Pacers which increase capacity on that route. The other Pembroke Dock circuit was replaced by a 150 thus releasing a 153 for Cardiff Bay, replacing Bubbles. There are 3 units required for the City Line and the third one is still a Pacer. This one requires to work to Taffs Well in the morning and 153s are not cleared to work north of Radyr. The 150 Pembroke Dock works Heart of Wales next day thus releasing another 153 which strengthens peak time Ebbw Vales. That should explain, I hope, how the 7 x 153 diagrams are deployed, the 8th Unit to cover Maintenance..

And coupled 158s also. Experienced a couple of weeks ago.

When I did the 1316 Swansea to Shrewsbury last October it was a 150/2. Not sure if it was normal at the time...though can't see why they'd have a 150 scheduled in the winter and a 153 in summer..?

150s often cover HOW diagrams which are booked for 153. Today I think the 0519 was a 150 when its booked a 153. Also a few nights last week I saw the last swanline was a 150 (1805 Shrewsbury-Swansea)

I noticed a 153/158 combo working the 1540 Ebbw Vale Parkway - Bridgend service which arrived into Bridgend on time at 17:02.

It was however late crossing over onto the Maesteg branch to reverse as a bridge strike west of Bridgend had delayed the 16:28 Swansea - London Paddington service which eventually arrived into Bridgend at 17:06 and departed at 17:08

The 158/153 combo then passed through Bridgend at 17:13 running empty back to Cardiff.

Pity the Ebbw Vale services cannot be extended to Bridgend on weekdays calling at Pontyclun and Pencoed, however this would depend on paths available aand trains crossing over onto the Maesteg branch to reverse quickly and returning to Platform 2 at Bridgend within about 3-4 minutes

Not all the Ebbw Vales sit at Cardiff for nearly an hour now. There is this one and a morning peak one that go to Bridgend.

Yes, it's booked for a 153+158. 153323 and 158818 worked the service today. I believe the 158 comes off the 0709 Pembroke to Cardiff train, before working the 1135 Cardiff to Ebbw Vale and 1240 return, then the 1435 out and 1540 back (with a 153 attached of course).

I believe the same thing happened yesterday, IIRC.

There is an 0642 Maesteg to Ebbw Vale, an 0807 Bridgend to Ebbw Vale and a 1540 Ebbw Vale to Bridgend, but no others unfortunately. The 1640 from Ebbw used to extend to Swansea daily, but this only happens on a Saturday now. This was the 1738 from Cardiff which was actually very busy; this has now been replaced by an 1804 Swanline stopper and the 1430 Manchester to Milford Haven has been brought forward to depart Cardiff at 1740 instead.

The turnaround at Bridgend is very tight indeed!

However, hats off to ATW, they have done a good job extending some services I believe!
