I was just awaiting the delays 11:15 Manchester Picc service to Euston when I overheard a passenger talking to a train dispatcher.

He was asking what the upgrade price was on board. The chap replied that sometimes it can be £50 or if they are busy the full price like £200

Does anyone know about this practice? Is it new and is there any guidance on costs?

Or you can bid via the seatfog app. Prices vary could be as little as £15. Can't do it at the last minute & it is tied to a specific train.

Looks like this upgrade is valid from Euston to stations between Birmingham International (£30) to Preston (£50) inclusive. Odd that it's not available between Lancaster and Glasgow Central, though.
