Looking at the dirt along the bottom of it, I would say that's just the "transition" livery as painted by Virgin (but without their Flowing Silk livery). The doors were painted a rather dark flat grey which seem to look almost blue ish in some photos, green is in others, and grey.

I’m probably dreaming here but one would hope that awful looking front end is given some TLC whilst at Ilford.

I know it’s been discussed before but is there a reason the Avanti text has been covered by yellow tape on the front?

I think that is where the Virgin badge is located. Perhaps they botched the job of removing it or it is being taped over until refurbishment when it will be removed as with XC's sets.

Avanti are doing rather well considering for a while there were only 2 branded pendolinos. Given how quickly it is going it won't be long until all the pendolinos have been branded, even if it is only the end cars.

There's also another 221 that went down to Ilford the other night. Not sure on the number though

Is there any news on if 221101 is due to head back from Ilford today?

From the images I have seen, the full yellow front including cab window sides has been restored with the unit still completely white.

Thats correct. It looks like the yellow ends have been repainted/cleaned and had Avanti logos reapplied but the white body side hasn't been touched (still dirty from before). Hopefully it'll have the Avanti ends added like the 390s at a later date.

The first pictures of Avanti West Coast Super Voyager 221101 have been released after its return to service.

Standard class interior of set 221101 after it’s refresh
The refresh was the first in an £8.3m deal which was signed with Bombardier last year.
We reported on the plans in July and the full details can be seen here.

Does look good but I hope they replace the dot matrix reservation screens in the pendolinos with the more modern ones used in the 800s, the coloured lights on them would make it easier to find an unreserved seat. I wouldn't bother doing it on the super voyagers yet as they will leave Avanti in 2 years.

There is an important, but silly, flaw with that system. For some reason the designers saw fit to put all the coloured lights in the same place, so it's entirely inaccessible to those who are colourblind.

No more installations of that system should be made until a tweak has been made to solve this issue, in my opinion.

They should fix that problem but I'm not sure how, when you are quite far away it isn't going to be easy to tell if a seat is unreserved if the LEDs are only 1-2cm away from each other.

It strikes me that there isn't much in the way of space to put them in different places however, certainly not in a way that would enable a colour blind person to distinguish them at a glance - which is the main purpose of the system! The screen (arguably the main feature of the reservation display) still provides the same information as the lights, just in a more involved way.

To be honest there isn't an immediate solution which will be effective when far away. May as well just have people read the screen if they can't tell the colours apart, unfortunate but currently everyone has always read the screen on pendolinos and voyagers to find an unreserved seat.

Thats quite pleasant actually .Under the circumstances is there a chance the Pendolinos will now just get the same treatment?

I believe a contract has been signed for the refurbishment of the Pendolinos. I suspect a notice to proceed was issued under that contract and if so AWC could not get out of it without incurring penalties to the contractor. On that basis, I don’t think they will stop the existing scope of refurb is my guess.

I quite like to the look of them, I wonder if they smell any better, with new seated upholstery and floors.

Last I heard, the new seating for standard has been approved and I guess the manufacturer has made a tool for them so I guess no going back.
