Aylesbury via Rickmansworth why do there always seem to be Chiltern staff in the back cab?

Silly question but why is there always a driver or conductor in the rear driving compartment on these services do they have to be there or are they just commuting too /from work but just staying out the way anyone know???

Most likely the latter, given Chiltern is mostly Driver Only Operated (apart from the loco-hauled services and the West Ealing parliamentary) South of Banbury.

I work in Rickmansworth a quite often see someone sat in the rear drivers compartment was just curious if it was part of the operation of that line or just commuting to /from work but as you say revenue is very rare on that line

They could also be travelling between workings known as travelling pass or as been stated commuting to/from home.
