I'm in the middle of a few blank days. Back with a bang on Friday. Spotting trip but great haulage and route.

Another Saturday night full of ECML diversions.
47403 2235 York – Doncaster via Selby
To be honest, I’ve had better starts to the weekend …

Sunday 20/01/80
Having arrived at Edinburgh from Kings Cross behind cross-eyed 40062, it was now a case of hunting down whatever class 40 action was available in Scotland on a Sunday morning:
40083 0810 Edinburgh – Perth via Ladybank
This was a through train to Inverness, but unfortunately there was a portion from Glasgow Queen Street attached at Perth, and it was the 47 from that portion which worked forward to Inverness. The kindly traincrew supervisor at Perth told us that 40083 would be staying there all day, then working back to Edinburgh on the balancing southbound working that evening. Fair enough: the Glasgow – Aberdeen road is usually a good bet for some class 40s. No, not today it isn’t. Glasgow Queen Street was closed for engineering works all day, so the few Aberdeen services which were running were diverted into Glasgow Central – and of course class 40s were banned from Glasgow Central. So the only choices were to get the hell out of town as quickly as possible, or to spend the day spooning around behind 47s (and getting a bit of new track in the book), and take our chances that something decent might produce heading southbound from Edinburgh that evening. Well …
47181 1006 Perth – Dundee
47269 1113 Dundee – Perth
47470 1306 Perth – Dundee
47181 (again) 1433 Dundee – Glasgow Central via Cumbernauld, Coatbridge Central, Carmyle, Rutherglen
47269 (again) 1645 Glasgow Central – Perth via Rutherglen, Carmyle, Coatbridge Central, Cumbernauld
40083 1952 Perth – Edinburgh via Ladybank
On arrival back at Edinburgh we covered all the overnight trains up the ECML, hoping against hope that one of them might produce a 40, or at least a Deltic…
(Monday 21/01/80)
47406 0008 Edinburgh – Kings Cross via Selby
A weekend that started so well, ended so badly.

Wednesday 20/01/82
I was on only my second ever visit to Ireland – an amazing place. It had that strange air of being very similar, yet very different in so many ways. (At this time BR was having a series of national strikes, so this carefully-timed trip to Ireland was by way of a move to avoid the total paralysis afflicting the GB rail system).

086 0825 Heuston – Claremorris
018 1200 Claremorris – Ballina
018 1310 Ballina – Claremorris
086 1418 Claremorris – Athlone
077 1626 Athlone – Portarlington
088 1751 Portarlington – Heuston
183 2015 Connolly – Athlone via Mullingar, Moate.
I believe this was the only train of the day booked over this route, hence my eagerness to do it. This was the only time I ever travelled on this route, which has long since closed.
Thence off to a B&B in Athlone.

Monday 20/01/92
Just a commuting move – but with a difference. The NSE class 47 fleet was obviously having one of its periodic meltdowns:
47366 0740 Reading – Paddington
This was preceded by an equally NB 47237 on the 0642 Oxford – Paddington. I needed both locos for haulage. 47237 is now a regular thwarting the steam bashers at Carnforth for WCRC, so I still can’t escape it.

47587 1650 Paddington – Reading
I’m glad I got out of work in time to catch this, as both the 1705 and 1720 departures were cancelled. Obviously the Old Oak Common NSE 47 fleet was still terminally unwell.

20th January 1990

Around the West Midlands again.

Lowlights of the day were 47483, 47819, 47471, 47426, 47806, 86253 and 47823. I don't know why I spent so much of the day behind Duffs.

Fortunately there were a couple of highlights:

50031 New St - Coventry
85031 Coventry - Wolverhampton

Now that's what I call a pair of '31s' worth having!

20th January 1991

As promised, Sunday drags...

47565 (+86252) New St - Wolverhampton
47565 (+86241) Wolverhampton - New St

Hmmm.

BR Farewell Class 44 Railtour

This BR arranged railtour was a bit premature, as the last 44s were not withdrawn until the end of 1980. Maybe it was the last occasion they were used on a railtour.

It was a freezing cold morning when we left Nottingham for Chester behind no heat 44009. The 12 coach train had been pre-heated by the loco on the empty stock move, but things soon changed. After departure nearly every window on the train seemed to be open, with heads out and cold air flowing in.

44009 08:15 Nottingham-Barnsley
44009+56005 (banking) Barnsley-Dodworth
44009 Dodworth-Crewe

The route taken from Nottingham to Crewe was (via Chesterfield-Darnall-Tinsley-Wath-Barnsley-Dodworth-Pennistone-Woodhead-Guide Bridge-Stockport)

44009 came off at Crewe to be replaced by 44008+24133. The 24/1 was added for train heat but I can’t remember how effective it was. It must have been one of the few surviving Class 24s still running with a working boiler.

44008+24133 Crewe-Chester

There was over an hour to kill at Chester, so we left the station for some refreshments. When we returned 24133 had been detached, and no heat 44008 took us back to Nottingham.

44008 Chester-Nottingham (via Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton-Walsall-Lichfield City-Burton-Sheet Stores Jn-Nottingham).

That's a pretty fantastic railtour@Harvester both in terms of locos and track.

Meanwhile, here are my efforts for the day:

Saturday 21/01/78
45052 2008 Leeds – Sheffield
45107 2152 Sheffield – Leeds
I’ve no recollection of this strange move. I assume some purpose other than bashing must have been involved.

Sunday 21/01/79
47519 0024 Doncaster – York via Hare Park, Normanton, Leeds
55018 0329 York – Edinburgh via Stockton, Scotswood, Carlisle
After breakfast and a gentle stroll around Edinburgh, it was time for more bashing:
47553 1353 Haymarket – Edinburgh
55018 1410 Edinburgh – Newcastle via Carlisle, Stockswood
A Deltic over Beattock in daytime – excellent. I recall this journey was somewhat marred by the appearance of a Travelling Ticket Inspector just as we descended Beattock. We had a prolonged and ultimately quite expensive conversation. (This was before I joined the railways as an employee, so I was trying to use a student railcard and a strong sense of imagination as my ticket validity). I learned a lot that day.
31418 1738 Newcastle – York
This was the 1858 York – Kings Cross starting back from Newcastle.
You might have thought that as I was back in York, I’d now go home, but not a bit of it:
40117 1939 York - Newcastle
43100 + 43105 2157 Newcastle – Carlisle via Scotswood
(Monday 22/01/79)
The various ECML diversions were not booked for passenger stops at Carlisle, but in the days before Central Door Locking there was nothing to prevent you from boarding.
40064 0015 Carlisle – Newcastle via Scotswood
At the very front of the train was an unlit SK, so I had that to myself for the entire journey.
At Newcastle the 1930 Aberdeen – Kings Cross was shown as running an hour late due to loco failure. I wonder what it will get?
47007 0221 Newcastle – York
Thank you, and good night!

Wednesday 21/01/81
40068 2015 Kings Cross – York
(Thursday 22/01/81)
Yet again at York I covered all the southbound services. It was all very Sulzery. My very last hope was the 2035 Aberdeen – Kings Cross, officially a set down only stop:
47414 0341 York – Kings Cross
‘nuff said!

Thursday 21/01/82
Continuing my short leap to Ireland:
087 0951 Athlone – Galway
087 1135 Galway – Portarlington
078 1423 Portarlington – Kildare
074 1533 Kildare – Carlow
Leaping at Carlow was particularly poignant since my mate (who I was travelling with) worked in the LM Regional S&T drawing offices in Carlow Street near Mornington Crescent.
085 1636 Carlow – Dublin Heuston
072 1820 Dublin Connolly – Bray
209 1858 Bray – Dun Laoghaire
The Dublin – Bray suburban service at this time was operated by a clapped out selection of semi-derelict locomotives and even more clapped out rolling stock. At Bray there was a blackboard with the next departures listed, followed by the initials “NH” or “NL”. We pondered for a bit, then I joked “It probably means No Heat or No Lights”. The joke was on me: that’s exactly what was meant. So prospective punters were able to choose their departure times according to whether they wanted to travel in the dark or in the cold – or possibly both! From Dun Laoghaire we caught the night boat to Holyhead.

Friday 21/01/83
45124 1054 York – Huddersfield
DMU Huddersfield – Clayton West & return
45033 1326 Huddersfield – York
The Clayton West branch line closed the following Monday, 24/01/83. This was my only trip over the line.

Thursday 21/01/88
Returning from my parents’ house in Plymouth to Crewe with heavily-pregnant wife and 18 month old son, plus the usual loads of luggage etc. (so definitely no scope for “interesting” moves):
47445 1028 Plymouth – Birmingham New Street
86204 1458 Birmingham New Street – Crewe

Tuesday 21/01/92
50050 2215 Waterloo – Basingstoke
I’m unsure how this move came about, possibly there was some further disruption on the Reading – Paddington section, or maybe some evening meeting in the Waterloo area.

Saturday 21/01/95
47850 0635 Reading – Manchester Piccadilly via Stafford
Tram 1017 Manchester Piccadilly – Bury
5407 1200 Bury Bolton Street – Ramsbottom
40135 1225 Ramsbottom - Bury Bolton Street
40145 1300 Bury Bolton Street – Ramsbottom, piloting
40135 1300 Bury Bolton Street – Rawtenstall
40135 1400 Rawtenstall - Bury Bolton Street
40145 1425 Ramsbottom - Bury Bolton Street (piloting)
40145 (front) + 40135 (rear) 1500 Bury Bolton Street – Rawtenstall
40135 (front) + 40145 (rear) 1600 Rawtenstall – Bury Bolton Street
Tram 1006 Bury – Manchester Piccadilly
87015 1730 Manchester Piccadilly – Euston via Hixon
165 106 Paddington – Reading

Saturday 21st January 1979

Late 1970s/early 1980s I did a few tours organised by the Locomotive Club of Great Britain (LCGB). I did them for spotting purposes as they often included a Works and/or Depot visit at the destination. On reflection this one is great haulage and track wise, although I was probably more excited by the Doncaster Works visit at the the time.

Doncaster Rover No. 2

40106 Warrington Central to Doncaster via Stockport (reverse), Guide Bridge, Woodhead, Sheffield Victoria, Woodburn Junc, Tinsley Yard, Treeton North Junc, Aldwarke Junc, Doncaster.

40106 Doncaster to Warrington Central via Hare Park Junc, Wakefield Kirkgate, Healey Mills, Huddersfield, OA & GB Junc, Stockport (reverse).

Thanks to Six Bells Junction for the detail of the route.

40 106 running round at Stockport

20220120_174516~2.jpg

55019 and 55017/019 at Doncaster, maybe not even on this day, but hey when is it ever wrong to post a Deltic photo (never).

I remember taking a class 44 hauled tour from St Pancras to Manchester and return. We went via Tinsley and Woodhead. Must have been late 1970s. Tinsley - all those 20s up above us in the depot !. I think we also went past Toton. I think my motivation was TI, TO and RS for 76s (the 76s were the first loco class I set out to clear). I seem to recall getting a cab ride at StPancras from the buffer stops to the platform end.

A couple of interesting tours on this day in history then. Nothing from me today, but tomorrow is the start of an interesting journey that involved back-to-back overnights...

A quick afternoon spin on the Cambridge line:
37023 1436 Liverpool Street – Cambridge
37087 1611 Cambridge – Liverpool Street

Friday 22/01/82
Returning from my brief trip to Ireland:
47541 0521 Holyhead – Crewe
In the aftermath of the national rail strike, this was 30’ late start, awaiting a guard to sign on duty, and then terminated at Crewe 60’ late, all the further time lost by tottering loco. (The Queen Mother was feeling a bit bilious).
86251 0850 Crewe – Euston
This was the 0812 Manchester Piccadilly – Euston with Special Stop Orders for Crewe, Stafford, Lichfield TV, Rugby and Bletchley, in the aftermath of the strike.

Friday 22/01/88
A nice after-work run with 37/4s:
37430 1719 Crewe – Leominster
37427 1958 Leominster – Crewe

Readers may recall my uni interview trips in December to Birmingham, Aston and Leeds. Well it was time for one more interview - this time at Swansea. Too far to get there and back in a day, so I set off the previous evening and made use of the available overnight trains...

47435 Newcastle - York 1A40
47470 York - Crewe 1M41

I baled from the Shrewsbury at Crewe and found a cosy compo for the rest of the night. To be continued...

Can't remember the full details of all haulage but here are a few from the 80s:

Sat 2/7/83
0900 Guildford to Stafford (0805 Portsmouth-Manchester): 47482 Guildford to New St, thereafter 85034 or 85038 (can't remember which, sorry!)
I think the originally-intended electric must have failed at New St as there seemed to be a lot of attaching and detaching going on and the train left New St around 45 minutes late, suggesting the 85 might have been a substitute. I was a little young then so didn't get onto the platform at New St to see what was going on!

Sun 3/7/83
Unknown 47, 1400 Stafford to Reading. Think this was a Manchester-Paddington service.

Unknown weekday, first full week of 1984
47474 0900 Guildford to Reading, on same service as above. Unusual as this was a Stratford loco.

Sat 18/2/84
47600 Guildford to New St on the 0900 again (!) thereafter either 85034 or 85038 (see above. One one occasion I got one, and on the other, the other...)

Mon 20/2/84
1421 Stafford to Guildford, the return journey of the above. 85 then 47, but can't remember which. Notable as the 1426 Stafford to Plymouth (ex-Liverpool) had failed, so my train 'pushed' it into Stafford, left it on Platform 4, and then backed out north again before re-entering Stafford on Platform 1. Another significant delay as a result!)

Sat 29/9/84

47293 1125 Guildford to Reading: the summer-only Portsmouth to Leeds service. Mk-I stock, which was a rarity for me personally (all others here were Mk-II)

Sat 3/11/84
1045 Reading to Stafford (Brighton to Manchester service). 47 to New St (can't remember which), then 86237 "Sir Charles Halle" forward.

Sun 4/11/84
1433 Stafford to Wolverhampton, 47621 (a Piccadilly to New St service I think; diesel as they used to turn the wires off during engineering works, so many Sunday services were booked diesel north of New St)
Southbound Sunday Glasgow-Poole (can't remember time), 86214 Sans Pareil Wolverhampton to New St, forward with 47621 again off the above service. Strangely I think I got Sans Pareil again one day in the 90s, 18/11/96 on an evening Stafford to Reading service.

Unknown day in Dec 1989, around the 15th:
50007 Sir Edward Elgar, afternoon Basingstoke to Woking. Around 1500, at a guess.

Thursday 23/01/92
By this time I was involved in the operation of the Harwich – Zeebrugge container ships on behalf of RfD, so visits to both Harwich and Zeebrugge were fairly regular occurrences. This weekend there was a railtour on Saturday 25/01/92 steam hauled from Berlin to Wolsztyn and return, out via Kostrzyn and back via Rzepin. So I took the Friday off work, arranged for a Monday morning meeting in Zeebrugge (to get my Sunday hotel overnight on the way home on expenses) and set off after a full day in the office on Thursday:
86235 1925 Liverpool Street – Harwich Parkeston Quay
After visiting the RfD office at Harwich I boarded the container ship for the overnight sailing to Zeebrugge. As for 86235, let’s just say that as far as I am concerned the Novelty had long since worn off!

23rd January 1985

My journey to Swansea continued, courtesy of the Crewe - Cardiff overnight, followed by my first ever taste of Crompton haulage...

47557 Crewe - Cardiff 1V01
33001 Cardiff - Newport 2C06
33009 Newport - Cardiff 2B81
33055 Cardiff - Bridgend 2B77

I baled at Bridgend as there was a second loco-hauled service on its way and I was hoping for another Crompton...

47557 Bridgend - Swansea 2B05

For goodness sake! The Duff from the overnight! I should have stuck with 2B77.

I then festered on the station until it was time for the interview. I was struggling to keep my eyes open at times, especially when a member of staff was extolling the beauty of the Gower Peninsula. Anyway, I stayed awake, so time for the return journey...

HST Swansea - Cardiff
33037 Cardiff - Newport 1O93

I was looking forward to another Crompton up the Marches...

DMU Newport - Crewe

Turns out that the last train of the day was a unit. Bugger. I then had a bit of a fester at Crewe waiting for the overnight in the snow. To be concluded tomorrow...

23rd January 2022

Me and my wife have taken out joint membership of the KWVR this year. Today we used one of our free Day Rovers.

78022 Keighley - Oxenhope
78022 Oxenhope - Oakworth
M79964 Oakworth - Haworth
78022 Haworth - Keighley
78022 Keighley - Oxenhope
78022 Oxenhope - Keighley

Both the kettle and the chariot were required. One stop on the railbus was quite enough!

Out of interest, what is the criteria for posting in this thread? I have what I think is a good collection of moves that might be of interest but it is all in the last five years or so. I could always start a separate thread I guess!

It has broadly settled down to this Date in History posts. No time period restrictions that I am aware of:- I have posted stuff from my young teenage days in the sixties.

Monday 24/01/83
40086 1710 York – Manchester Victoria
Because of some disruption to local services, this called at all stations from Leeds to Marsden, then Stalybridge and Ashton under Lyne. 20’ late as a result.

86225 1545 Motherwell – Mossend
47546 1606 Mossend – Inverness
47049 2102 Inverness – Keith
I’d come all this way to sample the prototype Sprinter which had just entered service on the Inverness – Aberdeen route:
150 001 2212 Keith – Inverness
Yes folks, Sprinters really have been around for 36 years now!
… after which, the dreaded Blair Atholl overnight awaited …
47546 2330 Inverness – Blair Atholl

Sunday 24/01/88

Another LCGB tour, this time to Toton and Derby Works which would have been excellent from a spotting perspective. For this thread, here is the haulage and the route for the Midlander No. 3.

40013 Warrington Central to Toton via Man Picc, Stockport, Stoke, Uttoxeter, Stenson Junc, Sheet Stores Junc, Trent, Stanton Gate, Toton Depot (Meadows Reception Siding)
The 40's boiler failed, so...
20071/20041 Toton to Derby via Long Eaton
47143 Derby to Warrington Central via reverse of outward route

Please feel free to post anything that takes your fancy - old moves, general reminiscences, stories of being stuck on a cold wet platform in the middle of the night.

And if you want to post show photos too - even better!
