Another Saturday night full of ECML diversions.

To be honest, I’ve had better starts to the weekend …
Sunday 20/01/80
Having arrived at Edinburgh from Kings Cross behind cross-eyed 40062, it was now a case of hunting down whatever class 40 action was available in Scotland on a Sunday morning:
40083 0810 Edinburgh – Perth via Ladybank
This was a through train to Inverness, but unfortunately there was a portion from Glasgow Queen Street attached at Perth, and it was the 47 from that portion which worked forward to Inverness. The kindly traincrew supervisor at Perth told us that 40083 would be staying there all day, then working back to Edinburgh on the balancing southbound working that evening. Fair enough: the Glasgow – Aberdeen road is usually a good bet for some class 40s. No, not today it isn’t. Glasgow Queen Street was closed for engineering works all day, so the few Aberdeen services which were running were diverted into Glasgow Central – and of course class 40s were banned from Glasgow Central. So the only choices were to get the hell out of town as quickly as possible, or to spend the day spooning around behind 47s (and getting a bit of new track in the book), and take our chances that something decent might produce heading southbound from Edinburgh that evening. Well …
47181 1006 Perth – Dundee
47269 1113 Dundee – Perth
47470 1306 Perth – Dundee
47181 (again) 1433 Dundee – Glasgow Central via Cumbernauld, Coatbridge Central, Carmyle, Rutherglen
47269 (again) 1645 Glasgow Central – Perth via Rutherglen, Carmyle, Coatbridge Central, Cumbernauld
40083 1952 Perth – Edinburgh via Ladybank
On arrival back at Edinburgh we covered all the overnight trains up the ECML, hoping against hope that one of them might produce a 40, or at least a Deltic…
(Monday 21/01/80)
47406 0008 Edinburgh – Kings Cross via Selby
A weekend that started so well, ended so badly.
Wednesday 20/01/82
I was on only my second ever visit to Ireland – an amazing place. It had that strange air of being very similar, yet very different in so many ways. (At this time BR was having a series of national strikes, so this carefully-timed trip to Ireland was by way of a move to avoid the total paralysis afflicting the GB rail system).
086 0825 Heuston – Claremorris
018 1200 Claremorris – Ballina
018 1310 Ballina – Claremorris
086 1418 Claremorris – Athlone
077 1626 Athlone – Portarlington
088 1751 Portarlington – Heuston
183 2015 Connolly – Athlone via Mullingar, Moate.
I believe this was the only train of the day booked over this route, hence my eagerness to do it. This was the only time I ever travelled on this route, which has long since closed.
Thence off to a B&B in Athlone.
Monday 20/01/92
Just a commuting move – but with a difference. The NSE class 47 fleet was obviously having one of its periodic meltdowns:
47366 0740 Reading – Paddington
This was preceded by an equally NB 47237 on the 0642 Oxford – Paddington. I needed both locos for haulage. 47237 is now a regular thwarting the steam bashers at Carnforth for WCRC, so I still can’t escape it.
47587 1650 Paddington – Reading
I’m glad I got out of work in time to catch this, as both the 1705 and 1720 departures were cancelled. Obviously the Old Oak Common NSE 47 fleet was still terminally unwell.
