Has anyone been from Bar to Belgrade? It's supposed to be one of the most stunning rail journeys in Europe and information is tricky to find outside of Seat 61 and sketchy guidebook reports.

Heard the journey can be unreliable which I don't mind and the infrastructure is in an awful state which caused an accident a few years going.

Is it worth making the journey or are we best to stick to the Montenegro coast?

The line is one of the most scenic in Europe . You can take day or nightrain to Belgrade . Just a word of warning , dont expect a fast journey .The line is full of tunnels and switchbacks through Montenegro ! Budva and Kotor are very nice places in Montenegro:D

Went on this line in 2008 from Belgrade to Podgorica. Very scenic, especially when you crossed from Serbia into Montenegro. Very slow and delayed for several hours near the border for reasons unknown.

We stayed in Budva and visited Kotor. Both recommended.

Yeah trains are slow in the Balkans and there is no air condtioning . Im surprised you had to wait at the border , its the borders with EU countries that are the problem ones eg Serbia/Bulgaria . Montenegro is really scenic ..

Don't think our long wait was anything to do with the actual border crossing. Our train carried on into the Montenegro only after another train came into the station.

The line from Belgrade to Bar also briefly passes through Bosnia - Herzogovina which was very pretty.

The train had no air conditioning. But you could stick your head out the window, which was fun. The buffet/restaurant car served a passable lunch and plenty of beers.
