Welcome to the world of (monthly) season tickets. The magstripes on ordinary paper tickets simply aren't designed to last for more than half a dozen or so trips through a reader... (One of the reasons return tickets have seperate out/return parts.) A monthly season may well be expected to pass through a reader over 100 times, so you're almost certainly going to have to seek out staff every time after the first few days. Apparently the rail industry doesn't care.
Yes they do big changes are coming

Yeah, forcing us to use TOC-specific dumbcards or battery-powered tickets subject to software failure outside of the passenger's control, but inside their legal liability... "Progress" I suppose.

They won’t be TOC specific or I’ve wasted an awful lot of time and money
Barcodes, duh...

So VTEC gates will work, great. What about Northern's though?
They will still look like cheap plexiglass tat, and will still cause massive queues while overworked gate attendants vary wildly between letting you through and accusing you of fraud. You can't really fix that with a software upgrade.
