The first Cleethorpes to Barton on Humber was formed of the previous days unit, which on return from Barton terminated at Grimsby Town, then went ECS to Scunthorpe to form the 0819 Lincoln service. The 153 then formed the 1125 Lincoln to Adwick, over the past few weeks the Barton unit seems to form the 1214 Sheffield to Leeds. Does anyone know why this is?

To understand how the diagramming use to work
for example 153358 on a Monday was on the Barton diagram all day, on the Tuesday 153358 would form the 0600 Cleethorpes to barton and return as far as Grimsby Town, where is would run ecs to Scunthorpe and form the 0819 Scunthorpe to Lincoln / 1125 Lincoln to Adwick then Adwick to Sheffield.

Now it seens to form the 0600 Cleethorpes to barton and return as far as Grimsby Town, where its run ecs to Scunthorpe and form the 0819 Scunthorpe to Lincoln (terminates Sheffield) and a pacer takes over service from Sheffield to Lincoln and the 153 forms the 1214 Sheffield to Leeds along with a pacer, detaches at Leeds then operates to Manchester with a 158 in the afternoon. Any ideas why this happens now??

Surely this will change come April anyway with EMT taking over the branch?

It's not due to be transferred over into the EMT franchise until the new one starts in October 2017.

With regards to the unit diagrams themselves operators set them up according to servicing requirements to get units at a maintenance depot regularly; form departing services from arrivals without causing conflicts etc. If a particular service is regularly late then they might alter unit diagrams to make the service more robust etc.

They also probably look at passenger loadings and attempt to match capacity with demand with what they have to play with.

There's no real way of knowing without being on the inside.

I'm sure the 153 that joins with a 158 mid afternoon before going down the Calder Valley came off a Carlisle service. So this is possibly as a result of diagram changes on the S&C
