Despite this tragedy and loss of life, there is something positive to come from it. The Manufacturers will learn important lessons about the crash worthiness of the train.

There were only 2 on the maintenance vehicle, so the majority of deaths came from the leading coach of the train, which was 3/4's demolished. If it was only going half its intended speed, the devastation at full speed must be total.

Granted that most rail transport travelling at those speeds, when hitting a stationary object, arent going to fare well but the train didnt come flying off the track, and only the lead vehicle was affected by the incident. Theres no evidence of inter-vehicle crushing.

This is disgraceful. Just because the maintenance train runs on wheels and is diesel fueled doesn't mean it shouldn't be detected by the detection system.

I'm also led to beleive that the Shanghai maglev has an obstruction detection system but the 1984 test track where the crash happened didn't.

Obstruction Detection System - Sounds a great idea, didnt even know they existed. Would this be similar to Track Circuits on a conventional railway? Then again, if what ever is blocking the line doesnt conduct electricity it would activate the track circuit right?

Not sure the CTRL, with Eurostars travelling at similar speeds, has anything other than track circuits, but i'll happily be proven wrong :)
