Hi all,

I've always been used to seeing amber rotating beacons (ARB) on construction vehicles on building sites. However, there is a big building project in town, and I noticed the other day that one of the diggers had a green rotating beacon. I didn't think anything more of it, just assumed someone had put the wrong colour on, until I was driving on the A14 past Cambridge the other day, and saw another construction vehicle with a green beacon.

Is this just coincidence, or is there a reason why some are amber and some green?

Thanks.

It’s linked to the drivers seatbelt to show that he’s wearing it.

I too noticed the "green" lights a few weeks ago, and wondered. I'm surprised that construction vehicles go fast enough when on their sites for (lack of) seatbelts to be a worry; but I guess this is for when on the public highway

Thanks - so goes green when seat belt on?
So I understand. I did read somewhere that the idea is that for a particular type of machine (say a mobile crane) it might be working in a fixed position, so the driver can use it without his seatbelt on, so the green adds an additional indication of likelihood of movement. But don’t quote me on that, I’m struggling with where I found it. It’s quite a few years ago...

A bigger worry on sites is the operator being catapulted from the vehicle, or the operators not driving them appropriately (stood in the seat, hanging from the doorway). The green lights are very much used on sites and being caught with your green beacon not illuminated while driving can get you kicked off site.

Next time you get the opportunity have a look how much the operator gets thrown around even in a mini-digger, especially if they're doing something like moving heavy objects or drilling.

l always thought that green flashing lights were for doctors' vehicles rather than those used in construction.

On the public highway, yes. AFAIK, construction equipment with a green beacon shouldn't be used on the open road.
