In Berlin, public transit is reminding riders to 'mind the pay gap,' as well as watching their step. A ticket will be offered to women today [18 March] only that costs 21 per cent less than normal - the amount that women are paid less than men in Germany according to EU statistics. Men will be required to pay the full ticket fare or face evasion fines.

'It pays to be a woman,' is the slogan being used by Berlin's transport company to market the 'Frauenticket,' or women's ticket.

Of course offering a discount to women is "raising awarenness", while any discount to men would be greeted by howls of protests against gender discrimination.

One assumes that this will actually apply to any customer who self-identifies as a woman? It would be essentially impossible to choose anything else to discriminate in this way!

BrewDog have done this in the past too by offering their signature ale at a discounted rate for anyone who orders a 'Pink IPA', which anyone could do if they identified as female.

And yet a woman suffering pay discrimination

Gay men earn significantly less per hour in Germany than straight men. Globally, it's not so black and white. Gay men earned 9 per cent less than their straight counterparts, but lesbians were paid 12 per cent more than straight women.

Therefore passengers should be asked about their sexual orientation to get the ticket at the corresponding price, discounted or otherwise.
