Define "Best".

All should show the same data, so really we're just looking at the front end, or other features.

I don't bother with an app these days and just have a bunch of forwarding URLs from my personal website to National Rail for frequent stations I use:
http://mysite.com/stp > http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/stp
http://mysite.com/eus > http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/eus
http://mysite.com/pad > http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/pad
et al... (for example).

I know there are also easy URLs for most Virgin stations too:
http://virg.in/eus
http://virg.in/rug
http://virg.in/cov
http://virg.in/sta
http://virg.in/glc
http://virg.in/edb

et al...

I'd like one that has a simple compact widget that shows me targeted live running on my home screen without having to open an app. The NRE one doesn't work because it can only show direct trains between 'home' and 'work' stations and my journey requires a change. The recently discontinued Thule app was perfect, as were the previous versions of the TPE and Northern apps (albeit without a widget).

My current favourite is Fasteroute, as it has easily configurable favourites which can be reasonably easily selected whilst walking.

UK Bus Checker has added rail live running data recently and has a decent widget.

I designed this page specifically to have a fixed URL so that it can be bookmarked with a link on your home screen and in 1-click you're straight to live departures for your nearest station...

I use the Scotrail App.
Gives up to date info about all (i think) UK stations and its free. You can search for arrivals and or departures. Limited to about an hour in advance

These days it frequently it just crashes.

It seems to have been abandoned by the developer as there haven't been any updates for over two years.
We've pulled them for this precise reason as they need a number of fixes and are putting in tow with other work we are doing. April or so we're expecting an update and re-release.
