Hi guys

Late notice I realise :) but going to London from Chelmsford today, early afternoon, coming back anytime tomorrow afternoon with the ability to travel round central London on both days.

No railcards or anything else.

Any ideas on best tickets bearing in mind the last minute-ness...?

Off-Peak Return Chelmsford Essex - London Terminals £19.80
Validity
Outward - Friday: By any train except those timed to arrive London from 0430 to 1000.
Return - Saturday: By any train.

For travel in London, I would buy an Oyster card (£5 deposit) and put £20 cash on it. Use it to travel as much as you like, and when about to leave London choose whether to keep it for your next trip or return it to a station and get your deposit and the balance refunded.

Thanks! Will £20 on the oyster be enough to travel around for one afternoon and one morning/afternoon? I've never used oyster! :)

If you didn't mind changing at Shenfield and using the stopper between Shenfield & London Liverpool Street tonight.

Today :

SDS £6.30 Chelsmford - Harold Wood
ODT £8.50 Harold Wood - London Zones 1-6

Tommorow :

ODT £8.50 London Terminals - London Zones 1-6 (you can buy this from any LU ticket office or National Rail station)
SDS £6.30 Boundary Zone 6 - Chelsmford

( Buying the Boundary Zone 6 fare tommorow, will give you the ability to use a fast service between London & Chelsmford)

Key :

SDS : anytime day single
ODT : off peak day travelcard

total cost : £29.60

It certainly will be enough unless you make many journeys during the morning peak. See Oyster price capping here!

Provided that you touch in and out properly when doing a NR/LUL/DLR Journey then you'll eventually hit the price caps after a few journeys depending on the zones you've travelled in, it acts like a paper Travelcard!

It's worth bearing in mind that Off-Peak Day Travelcards are only valid after 9:30am on Weekdays in most cases. :)

But martin2345uk tells us he is arriving in London on a Friday afternoon and departing the next day, a Saturday. There may be some individual peak journeys on the Friday afternoon but all travel on Oyster will be subject to daily off-peak caps between £7 and £8.50 within zones 1-6.

Indeed you are right, I apologise for failing to read the OP correctly! Weekends have no restrictions on usage of Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets.
