Does anyone know why Realtime Trains are showing daily empty coaching stock runs from Blackburn to Settle and return? They seem to be Northern class 158s

Route knowledge learning/retention perhaps?

You say daily but I can't see this running today, tomorrow or yesterday.

When did you see it?

Possibly crew training for the Dalesrail Sunday service which i believe is running this summer. It was previously operated by Blackpool based crews.

This train did run on Thursday (18/02/21).

Whilst out for a walk near Downham I was surprised to see a Northern Class 158 pass by heading towards Hellifield. Upon a quick check of RealTime trains I noticed it was due to return to Blackburn about an hour later. Whilst standing on a railway over bridge near Downham/Chatburn at about 16:30, 158909 appeared again and headed off towards Clitheroe having greeted us with a blast of the train horn.

Here are a few quick photographs of the line and 158909 passing by: 158909 passing Downham between Clitheroe and Hellifield

There is talk of reinstating a regular passenger service between Clitheroe and Hellifield. A connection maybe?

The Dalesrail hasn't run for the past 2 summers so if there is intention to run this year then the drivers and conductors will need to do route learning

Interesting that the route-learning trips are crossing over at Settle Junction, rather than at Hellifield where the changeover between Blackpool and Skipton crews has traditionally taken place. Maybe a pathing issue?

Maybe the crews are covering to that junction so if the Clitheroe services are extended to Hellifield they can carry on to the reversing point before working the train back towards Blackburn?

I didn't think you could reverse at Hellifield so you have to go to Settle Jn.

It's route refreshing/learning for Blackpool crews in preparation for a restart of the Dalesrail services.

The drivers only go as far as Hellifield then a Skipton or Leeds driver takes it north but the conductors go all the way to Carlisle

Once every 2 hours Man Vic - Bolton - Blackburn - Clitheroe - Hellifield - Skipton would be a useful addition to the network, although it may not be quicker than Skipton - Manchester via Leeds.
