As an ex LUL Booking Clerk/MFSS I am interested in Booking Office arrangements in the current railway world. So can anybody tell me what station's (NR) ticket office is open for the shortest possible time. The shortest opening hours I have found is for Ashwell & Morden 0630-0915 M-F Sat/Sun Closed.

Does anybody know any station with shorter hrs. I know stations dont have staff or booking offices so I am not talking about these.

What a good question. I've been looking at this for a bit now: the shortest I think I've found is somewhere down on a FGW branchline at just a couple of hours (0700-0900 or something). I'll have to search to find it though!

I can see Castle Bar Park (FGW Greenford branch) 0700-1000 M-F only, but that isn't it.

Solved <:D

Warblington - 0755-0915 Monday-Friday only, closed Sat and Sun.

Lots of stations only open until lunchtime round here, I'm sure most used to be open untill late afternoon or early evening.

Best I can do ATM is Micheldever 06:20 - 09:05 Mon - Fri only.

Ok a vote here for Barmouth Mon - Sat 08:30 - 16:30 summer only.

Anyone know the opening/closing times of Glazebrook on the CLC, that's normally only open for a few hours in a morning isn't it?
Thanks

Not quite the shortest hours but Filton Abbey Wood is an odd one. 16:15 to 19:15 Mon - Fri only.

How on earth did you find those hours out. I have never even heard of the place
Where is it?

Seems most peculiar hours. I wonder how that came about perhaps someone can shed some light. There may be a logical reason.

Warblington's between Havant and Chichester in Sussex.

Filton Abbey Wood has an MoD base next door, I'm not sure if their work patterns may affect it.

Abbey Wood works "flexi" time, the afternoon core hours end at 1600 - so it is possibly for these people; BUT - I would have thought that those who were leaving by train would have arrived by train so would have a ticket already !! There could also be a potential for students from Filton College up the road.

Thanks guys for these suggestions. Since my original post I have been doing some digging it seems as far as I can tell that Warblington does have the shortest opening hours. 0755-0915. Hardly seems worth it but I suppose there is a reason for these particular hours. Anybody with some local knowledge can suggest why it is open at all.

This is what I collate when I'm bored. I believe the following list to be of the ten shortest [time]-staffed booking offices in Britain, shortest first:

Pos. Station Times Days Hrs / wk
1. Warblington 0755-0915 M-F 06h40
2. Overton 0700-0920 M-F 11h40
3. Rowlands Castle 0635-0915 M-F 13h20
4. Keynsham 0645-0930 M-F 13h45
5. Micheldever 0620-0905 M-F 13h45
6. Ashwell & Morden 0630-0930 M-F 15h00
7. Nailsea & Backwell 0630-0930 M-F 15h00
8. Teynham 0630-0930 M-F 15h00
9. Barming 0550-0915 M-F 17h05
10. Worle 0600-0930 M-F (experimental) 17h30

There's some very odd booking office hours.

I notice that Taplow (which was once my local station) is open until 1314.

Why not 1315?

Bowes Park 06:45-10:00 officially although the elderly gentleman who runs it routinely hangs around until 11:00 with his window open

There could be an agreement in place regarding accountancy work at the end of each shift. IIRC, clerks at City Thameslink back in '98 officially had 24 minutes between closing the sales window (or handing it over to someone else) and the end of the shift, which I suspect was in part because of the 37 hour working week and five day shift pattern. The reality was that on an early shift you'd have ended up with 15 minutes or so by the time the late shift were ready to take over.

By the looks of it, FGW have a shift length of 7 hours 24 minutes for Ticket Office staff, giving a 37 hour week. The clerk will be allowed 10 minutes to book on and get ready to open and 20 minutes to close and book up.

Cheers,

Barry

The only thing I can think of as a local commuter is the (very close) Warblington School, but even then students will be arriving, not departing! Incidentally the school's playing field ends very close to Havant station (not far away at all!)

The details for Tooting on both the NR and FCC websites give the ticket office hours as
Sunday: Closed
Saturday: 1030-1730
with no mention of any weekday hours (although I've sure their omission must be an error?)
It's my nearest station, but I never use it - can anyone who does confirm whether it's open during the week or not?
