I can see a 1213 to Grantham only. There's no direct Boston-London trains, even in high summer IIRC.

Anyway, that gets into Grantham at 1304, but the next train to there from Nottingham is 1540 if I'm reading it correctly, which is the 1445 off Boston.

Then 1710 off Nottingham, direct to Cardiff Central for 2031, it looks like that is the earliest it can be done for.

Sunday services really are at times pathetic in this country.

You can get the 1213 out of Boston to Grantham, then Grantham to Kings Cross, underground to Paddington, and arrive Cardiff for 1837. I got this by searching on East Coast from Boston to Cardiff Central, and put London (All) in the Via box.

With the price range the OP quoted, I thought he was on either an Open or Off-Peak Single, route Not London. The route London fares (+ Any Permitted) are considerably more expensive (SOS £92.05), whereas Route Not London is £70.60.

The following itinerary would appear to suit you:

Sundays
1213 Boston - Grantham 1304
1312 Grantham - Peterborough 1341
1352 Peterborough - Birmingham New St 1536
1630 Birmingham New St - Cardiff Central 1829

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be via a Permitted Route for a Boston - Cardiff journey.

I will amend this post later with a suggestion for appropriate tickets and fares.

See post #8 below for update.

Boston to Melton Mowbray Off Peak Return - £27.05
Melton Mowbray to University Birm Off Peak Return - £15.85
University Birm to Cheltenham Spa Off Peak Return - £14.70
Cheltenham Spa to Cardiff Central Off Peak Return - £14.05

Which totals £71.65 - should be valid for this itinerary however would restrict you to this route on the return.

Many thanks to gnolife, who has pointed out
Easement 30058

Journeys to and via Derby may travel via Birmingham and Leicester. Journeys to and via Birmingham may travel via Derby and Leicester. The easement applies Saturdays and Sundays only.

That Easement means the 1213 Boston - Cardiff Central 1829 journey above is following a Permitted Route on a Sunday if the ticket is a Cardiff Central - Boston (or vice versa) route Not Via London Off-Peak Return (SVR), and it appears to meet Merthyr's needs.
