Having just discovered the BR Fares website, I checked out a couple of journeys I'm due to take later this year to see what the BZ6 fares to Bristol TM and Derby were.

For the BZ6 to Bristol TM it only offered me an SWR Weekend Upgrade, and for the BZ6 to Derby it said 'no fares available'.

Are BZ6 fares only available on certain routes, or to certain destinations?

Think that BZ6 fares are essentially only available to outboundary destinations within the Network Railcard (London and South East) area.

Boundary Zone 6 fares are, generally speaking, only available for destinations within the former Network South East area (Intercity understandably having little interest in letting Travelcard holders travel more cheaply).

BZ6 fares are generally the same, or very close to, the fare from the last Zone 6 station on the 'main' line of route. So it is only really the flexibility you are losing if you split at the appropriate Zone 6 station.

You could see why they are limited by checking the ticket prices from the relevant London Terminal and the last station in Zone 6 on the line of route. In most such cases you will find there is no difference in the fares*, so offering a Boundary Zone fare would not achieve anything. It is more this than a suggestion of carrying anyone free of charge. In any event, most long distance operators do not accept Freedom Passes on their services and I would expect the 60+ Oyster to fall into the same restriction.

In the case of Derby the fare from the boundary station, Elstree, is actually higher than from St Pancras!
