Hi All, i bought this tail lamp this week and it arrived today. Quite curious as to what the red paint on it is from and what the numbers on the back mean. Any help is appreciated!

Perhaps it was a lamp used by Rail Express Systems, some sectors claimed and labelled lamps supposedly for their own use. However when required any handy lamp would do! Numbers?? Sorry no idea. Is it a stick in label?

They were meant to be tracked at one point. In the late 1970'sand 1980's battery tail lamps were reported on "18 Comment Cards" on TOPS. I think it stopped when the cheap and cheerful plastic lamps likethis one entered service.

One loco support coach that I helped restore had no less than four lamps on board when we received it. We kept the best two ( Virgin Trains and Freightliner) and donated the two battered EWS labelled ones to the local shunters.... Then there was the task of finding where to obtain new batteries - long before the days of HOPS.
