A single ticket in the Rhein-Ruhr region has this condition:

- beliebiges Umsteigen (nicht für Rund- und Rückfahrten) zwischen allen VRR-Nahverkehrsmitteln inklusive

which according to google, means:

- any changes (not for round trips and return journeys) between all VRR local transport

If you take a scenic route to a destination, maybe two-thirds of a circle when you could have got there more directly, is that against the "round trip" rule? And if you break the journey on a bus for example before re-joining the same bus route, is that wrong?

There is a time limit which can restrict the possibilities.

You can take a break ad long ad you don't overstretch the time vadility in the ticket. That is 90 min from stamping in Zone A with an increasing slot in the higher zones up to D.

I think it would be fine as long as you stay within the zones and time limits, and are not travelling towards the origin point of the ticket.

But if the honeycombs/Waben are displayed on the ticket then you might need to find out where those are and not deviate out of them.

I think the VRR site lets you select "via points" so you could see what ticket it tells you to get, then at least you have a defence if challenged.
