If you buy a ticket from London to Seaford, can you go back to London from Portslade with the same ticket or would an additional single be requires from Portslade to Brighton?

Would extra ticket would need to be Portslade -> Preston Park, or Portslade -> Hove, or Portslade - > Brighton?

Portslade-Hove would do, provided you went Hove-Preston Park directly (anything valid from Brighton to London is generally also valid via Hove, so you're free to effectively start late at Hove).

A single from Portslade is the same price (£3) to all three of Preston Park, Hove and Brighton though.
