Morning,

I have an Advance ticket from Brighton to Bristol this afternoon. The route is Thameslink to St Pancras and then GWR from Paddington.

On the ticket itself, it only states the GWR service as being my booked train. Would my ticket be valid via Southern to Victoria, just because the train journey is a little quicker, and then I'd be on the same train from Paddington. I'm aware of Advances only being used on booked trains, but there isn't anything specified on my ticket as to which train I get from Brighton. Or will it not work through the barriers at Victoria?

I have no issue with Thameslink, it's just I find the 387s much nicer to travel on.

Thanks in advance.

providing it's a valid connection, yes.

next time specify via Victoria to get the itinerary you require; optionally adding additional interchange time if you require a particular train as part of your itinerary

To be fair, I didn't put via Victoria when searching but I don't think it would have been the same price. Coincidentally, my ticket got rejected starting at Brighton!

If you put in via Victoria you will quite likely miss out on the cheapest price, this is because the fast Southern services to Victoria have a counted places reservation quota whereas there are none on Thameslink.
I used to think that the best way to travel Brighton to Bristol was along the coast but I don't think I could stand a 16x all that way.

Possibly, all Bristol tickets are rejected at Brighton so a manual check can be done and the passenger advised about routing (via Salisbury / via London) ?

But I would be starting my journey at Brighton regardless, so I'd need to enter the barriers at some point!

I did do this once, it's not too bad but the journey is much longer. Annoyingly, the 166 I had from Fratton to Cardiff (3 hours) had an ear-splitting whining sound coming from it! (166210).

I know it's off topic, but the 166s have always been a bit whiney compared to the 165s, I think it's the AC? I've never found it annoying though, you get the same sound on a 158 anyway.

At my local station all Advance tickets are rejected by the barriers and have been for years.

Thank you very much for confirming :)
The advice is incorrect !!!

GWR advance tickets marked "and connections" into services from Farringdon will work on any GTR train. However if you go via Victoria and get on a Southern "reservable" train you need a counted place. If you force the journey via Victoria at the point of purchase and it books it will probably be dearer anyway but will also give you a counted place on a train on the VIC BTN leg which is a mandatory timing.

An Southern RPI who knows that it is a reservable train will know you should have a time and counted place on your reservation card or M ticket details. You could have gotten a fine.

Really? Exactly what fine would you seek to impose?
If you on a wrong advance train (which the OP was on if it was a reservable SN service) it's a new single for the entire journey which if not paid could go down the road of MG11/TIR.

I cant find anywhere its written down but I understand that Southerns policy is not to enforce reservations on cross London (Plus Connections)Advances as it is revenue neutral for them.
Southern only introduced their own advances because an Inter city operator was selling short distance plus connections advances that were snapped up by London Commuters as an alternative to anytime tickets. The quotas for these tickets (I believe the flow was something like Brighton to Peterborough) were apparently quite impressive as they were a nice little earner for the Intercity operator who knew that they were rarely used north of London.

I had not ever heard that.

Correct. At one stage you could buy a say, Deal to Swindon advance which was any train into London and the 2230 Paddington to Swindon for £11.50 but use the leg into London at say 0800, handy £11.50 single at peak !!!
