Major delays between Bournemouth and Southampton Central expected until 14:00

Incident created: 15/03/2012 06:40
Route affected: Poole, Bournemouth, Hinton Admiral, Brockenhurst, Southampton Central, Basingstoke and London Waterloo / Reading
TOC(s) affected: CrossCountry, South West Trains
Description: A broken down train is causing disruption at Hinton Admiral. Because of this, the following changes will apply until further notice:
  • There are delays of up to 120 minutes between Bournemouth and Southampton Central.
  • A supplementary bus service is running between Bournemouth and Southampton Central.
  • CrossCountry and South West Trains passengers may use each other's services on reasonable routes.

From LDB, it looks worse than NRE is suggesting; XC have basically given up with Bournemouth and are turning trains at Southampton, and as far as I can tell eastbound SWT trains are actually queuing in Bournemouth.

Incident created at 06.40, and expected to last till 14.00? That's an awfully long time to deal with a dead train. Why is this disruption particularly severe?

EDIT: Accorting to SWT's Twitter feed, the dead train has already been Thunderbirded out of the way...

Got down to BMH this morning at 7.50, all a bit chaotic really, one train on P2, and another one visible out to the west queuing up.
The one waiting at P2 was the 6.25, and completely full of people, and indications from the staff suggested it'll be another hour atleast. Looking through LDB looks like it set of about 9am as a semi-fast.
Didn't hang around long, just turned around and came back home once it was clear nothing much was going to be running anytime soon.

LDB for BCU showed a Lymington train cancelled, crewing issues maybe?

XC's seem to be running again anyway, I'll be aiming for one of them because it's always followed by another fast.

It's because the trains and train crew are all out of position for the return workings. Once the unit diagrams and crew diagrams go badly out of sync it usually takes about 6 hours to fix.

Turning XC at Southampton is much better for the rest of the XC network for the rest of the day, than struggling to reach Bournemouth, and if the early morning northbound trains have also been started at Southampton their overall timetable shouldn't be so badly affected.

Looks like a bit of repositioning is being done; 10.45 XC from BMH was running to time and comprised two voyagers with the front half locked out. Taking up all of P1 at BCU was a 12 car 450 on it's way to Poole.

What got it on the move? A 66 or 73 from Eastleigh?

It would be very unlikely, SWT would just use another Desiro normally.

They got rid of their own 73s - they just weren't getting used as rescue locos so were no longer justified.

Ahh okay. I knew that SWT no longer have any 73s, so I was wondering how a unit would be rescued. :)

Wikipedia say SWT retain a 73. is this wrong?

Dunno if one is still stored out of use somewhere with SWT. They definitely no longer have the three spread around the network that were in regular use. They could only couple with a Desiro using an emergency coupler, so were always the least likely solution for a rescue of a 450 or 444.
