Widely reported on Twitter and elsewhere a track maintenance vehicle has derailed where the East Lancs Railway joins Metrolink, south of Bury Interchange. Metrolink lines fouled and service suspended.

Anyone any idea how and why?

ALL trams have been cancelled between Bury and Whitefield for the rest of today after a train derailed on the line.

The specialist weed killing train came off the tracks on the East Lancashire Railway at around 10.30am today, blocking the Metrolink line between Bury and Whitefield stations.

Manchester Metrolink’s Twitter account confirmed that replacement bus services are running between Whitefield, Radcliffe and Bury tram stops.

Rerailing took a day due to incline and height of vehicles.
Early indication failure of MPV equipment and runaway ultimately being derailed on trap points.

ELR apologetic that trap points failed to protect the Metrolink line and have ordered the ELR track to be temporarily lifted until inquiry/improved trap sorted.

Looks like a commendably open and prompt response by ELR, in contrast to the recent behaviour of certain other bodies involved in operation of heritage trains.

1. What's the purpose of the connection between ELR and Metrolink? For whose benefit? Metrolink to National Network via ELR and Castleton?
2. Is there another connection between Metrolink and anything else? I think the connnection east of Victoria was lifted some time ago.
3. Surely the purpose of Trap/Catch points is to prevent a runaway from fouling the running lines?

Engineering trains have used the ELR link to access Metrolink track from time to time, although this would only be under possession and full-height locomotives don't fit.

There is another connection at Altrincham and the Oldham Rochdale line included connections at Dean Lane refuse terminal and at the Rochdale reversing siding but I think the latter was never connected. These were all similarly intended for engineering access.

It appears from the post above that ELR now considers the trap point needs to be relocated, but no doubt RAIB will have a view on that. There have been accidents in the past when a train is derailed on traps but ends up foul of the line they should have been protecting.

However, commenting in general rather than on this specific incident, depending on gradients an unbraked train rolling out of a siding with no traps could a long distance on the main line and cause a severe accident.

ELR and Metrolink have a good working relationship, ELR operates engineering trains on Metrolink sometimes and Metrolink gives them donations of used track, platform canopies recovered from Oldham line conversion and other gubbins.

I understand that the connection will now not be severed. A Sleeper has been chained to the rail a few metres before the boundary gate.

The ELR yard is rarely used by Metrolink but they have used it to collect ballast using the Metrolink Multi Purpose Vehicle.

ELR have in the past operated engineers trains on Metrolink. Overhead lines have to be isolated if this is going to happen as the clearance is not sufficient for mainline locomotives to operate at certain locations and the overhead cables can touch the roof at a couple of places.

As there is no connection at Victoria now this is the only location to get heavy engineering onto the Bury line part of the network if required.
