Going to York on Sat 9th June with my wife and son (Railfest!!!)

Leaving BSE on the 6.30 in the morning.

I want to leave York at approx 17.30 - getting back to BSE at around 9pm.

Looking a this there is a EMT service from York which will suit.

Travalling with a Family Railcard - no other discount will apply.

What is the cheapest way to do this trip?

I think it is

Journey Out - Advance £32.95

Journey Back

Because it is a EMT service, no advance fare ! from york so will need from Doncaster. Single from york to Doncaster - Total £46.10.

There must be a cheaper way???

Yep, use the text only version of the EC website to specify "longer station interchange times". You can then get £32.95 through tickets for your party on the 1729 from YRK. :)

Unless anyone can come up with something inventive I think calc7's advice is going to be the best the ECML is pretty much these day a book in advance railway rather than a walk up and go railway. Only thing to warn you about is that you'll have an hour wait at Peterborough by catching the 1729 from York.

Could come in useful if there's a bit of a delay! :)
Agreed with ainsworth74 - sadly the 2-tracking means no convenience vs price structure as on the WCML with LM doing the slow and cheap and Virgin the quick and dear.

If you don't mind a longer journey time, then you can book Bury St Edmunds to York via East Garforth (which involves travelling via Leeds).
Outward 6:29-10:21 £16.15 single
Return 17:12-20:53 £16.15 single
Quite a substantial saving.
