Sometimes it is merely a coincidence, as when Network Colchester extended the 133 from Braintree to Colchester in 2011 which involved some running along a short section of the A133 to the west of Colchester.

Or deliberate as when the short lived Budget Buses ran their 12 from Colchester to Chelmsford and the 120 from Colchester to Braintree using elderly Leyland Nationals in 1995.

I also don't think it was a coincidence that the X30 from Southend to Stansted Airport runs along the A130 (now much shortened) for a major proportion of its route.

It certainly can be deliberate, such as FirstGroup's short-lived X64 which used the A64 between York & Leeds, and was a failed attempt to compete with Coastliner.

your mention of the X64 reminded me. Didn't Stagecoach run an X27 from Southampton to Bournemouth for a while?

X38 Exeter to Plymouth? (though it doesn't use as much of the Devon Expressway as it used to)

The Metrobus route 273 service (Brighton-Crawley) runs along the A273 between the A23junction at Pyecombe and Stonepound Crossroads in my old home village of Hassocks.

Oddly enough, the 271 service, recently(ish) extended to Brighton, runs along the whole length of the A273, from Pyecombe to the edge of Haywards Heath, before continuing to Crawley!

Megabus M90 uses the A90/M90 from Edinburgh to Perth. The M9 uses a bit of the M9 around Stirling, the M8 uses a bit of the M8 between Glasgow City Centre and the M80. Stagecoach West Scotland X74 uses the M74 between Beattock and Glasgow, X75 and X77 use large parts of their namesake A roads and Motorways.

The Bath Bus Company A4 service between Bristol Airport and Bath uses the section of A4 between Brislington and Bath, albeit missing out the length of the Keynsham by-pass.

Arriva X5 (Shrewsbury-Telford) runs along the A5.

Also, IIRC the X38 (Burton-Derby) runs/ran along the A38.

The X38 does run along the A38 - and Wardle's X50 used the A50 for some of it's route from Hanley to Derby until it was cancelled last year

I'm sure it is also intentional that Yorkshire Tiger's present service 528 from Halifax to Rochdale becomes a new X58 with the timetable changes at the end of this month.

There's Carousel Buses A40 service from High Wycombe to Heathrow Airport which runs along the A40 from High Wycombe to outside Uxbridge.

One that is a genuine coincidence is the 21 London bus route, which starts in Lewisham as does the A21, but then they head in completely opposite directions, sharing road space for a few hundred yards at most (less in one direction).

In the late 1990s, First West Yorkshire ran a service from Huddersfield to Meadowhall Interchange, using the M1 from Haigh to Tinsley. It didn't last long, but was numbered 'M1'.

Chester - Whitchurch buses are the 41.

The road is the A41.

Not a coincidence!

Stagecoach Oxfordshire 34, which now just runs two journeys a day in each direction M-F from Oxford to Wantage via Steventon and Harwell Campus runs substantially along the old A34 (now partly the B4017, partly the A4130 and partly the A4183). It used to run from Oxford beyond Harwell through to Newbury, which was once almost entirely upon what used to be the A34. (Thames Travel recent, peak-hour X34 also follows part of this route, with a bit more on the current A34 too)

Also nearby the now Stagecoach X15 from Witney to Abingdon (which formerly went on to Berinsfield and Wallingford) runs largely along the A415

York's Poppleton bar park and ride is numbered 59 that runs along a section of the A59.

Anglian buses 7 used to be the A47 and X47 running on the A47 between Great Yarmouth and Norwich, First's X1 might use the A1 near Peterborough, not certain about that.

Lothians 7 uses the A7 twice. Once from the East End, over the North and South Bridge, out towards Newington and again when it turns back towards the city along Old Dalkieth Road from Ferniehill Drive to the ERI.

And the 1 uses the A1 for about 40 yards between the top of Leith Street and the end of the A1 at the junction with North Bridge. :D

Afraid not - the A1 ends at the west end of Waterloo Place!

For a time between 2000 and 2012 the 8 used part of the A8 between North Bridge and Waverley.

In the Borders, Perryman's service 68 uses the A68 between the Ravenswood roundabout and Jedburgh.

Interesting - looking into it and asking around, there seems to be some disagreement about whether the A1 ends at Waterloo Place or the junction with North Bridge.

Google Maps shows the A1 ending at North Bridge, although I've always considered the west end of Waterloo Place to be its terminus. Maybe the short bit of road between Waterloo Place and North Bridge is the roads equivalent of No Man's Land - "The Road With No Number"?

Liam mentioned the 7 earlier. Before the A7 was diverted to cover the route of the A68 out of Edinburgh as far as Sheriffhall in the early 90s (as a result of the completion of the Dalkeith bypass), the 7 followed the A7 between North Bridge and the south end of Craigmillar Park.

A short-lived Lothian service, the 68, ran along the A68 between Danderhall and Dalkeith prior to the 1991 A7/A68 rerouting and the truncation of the A68 to Sheriffhall.

The former Tuesday and Friday only H50 Altrincham to Sandbach via Holmes Chapel service ran along the A50. I'm not sure why there was a H in the service number.
